As we wake up still north of 400 days before Election Day, Donald Trump remains the Republican frontrunner. A once-huge lead, however, is now down to single digits in a CNN poll released Sunday morning. Charles Lane of The Washington Postas down-the-middle-vanilla-pundit as one gets (thats a compliment)described it correctly on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace earlier (paraphrasing): The fascination with Donald Trump is starting to fade. And that isnt the kind of opinion without merit we hear so often on political roundtables. Instead, theres actual numbers and trends behind it. The facts are clear: Trump is down six points overall in the past month. Ben Carson is down five. One-time frontrunner and one-trick pony Scott Walker is below one percent. The outsiderstwo of the three on the GOP side, anywayare being exposed for the obvious: Not having much to offer in terms of substance, particularly Trump who speaks in so many 30,000-foot, overarching themes, that CNN actually cut away from a recent foreign policy speech in San Diego because nothing in terms of specifics was being offered.
This move by the network is significant when considering this stat unearthed by Zignal Labs, a California-based firm that monitors social, online and traditional media: From June 16 (when he jumped into the race) through September 14, Trump has been the subject of at least 2,159 CNN reports. When breaking that down into a context easy to absorb, that equals one per hour for 24 hours for 90 straight days. Note: When even CNN shows its getting tired of the Trump show, thats a big sign.
So Trump and Carson are starting to fall (the latter of whom made an utterly ridiculous remark about Muslims need not applying for the job of U.S. President Sunday morning on Meet the Press). So who benefits? The dominant winner of the only two debates held by both parties thus far: Carly Fiorina.
Whether it was the kiddie table debate in August, the marathon debate at the Reagan Library last week or any of the dozens of major interviews shes given across the media spectrum, no candidate has shown to be better prepared, more articulate or impressive than the 61-year-old Fiorina (second place goes to Bernie Sanders). And the polls finally show it: CNN now has her in second place behind Trump nationally (24/15, a 12-point rise for Fiorina). Another flash poll out of New Hampshire has her now leading Trump by 4. While all of this is happening, Marco Rubio has risen eight points to 4th, which is significant because of who hes now leading (the Ancestry.com-challenged Jeb Bush).
So is steak finally winning the war against sizzle? The trend appears to be going in that direction. Rubio has been steady and solid, and he possesses a newfound gravitas and command that had been questioned in this space in the past. And in the end when the dust settles, ask almost any Democratic Party member who theyd rather face in a general election: Trump/Carson? Or any combination of Fiorina/Rubio/Kasich?
The fall of Trump has been predicted hundreds of times across the political pundit class, including here. But it appears to be a very real thing happening this time. And its not because of a single gaffe or moment, but becausefinallythe more serious and substantive candidates are outshining those who speak in overarching themes with little in the way of specifics. But if the CNN debate and the reality TV food fight it sought to create (not Jake Tappers finest moment given what little attention he gave to big issues such as the economy and jobs) are any indication, substance wont be taking a front-seat tomorrow in coverage tomorrow or next week. But hopefullyas Carly showed last week and Bernie consistently illustrates as wellmaking strong arguments without the fluff can be compelling stuff, too.
Let’s see what other polls say.
I don’t really trust CNN
So Carly and Rudio are taking voters from Trump? I don’t see how. Trump’s base included people outside of the Republican Party.
I don't really have to tag it as sarcasm, do I?
I heard Trump on CNN Sunday and he made the comment to Jake Tapper that he gave softball questions to Carly during the debate and Tapper actually giggled. If that doesn’t tell you all you need to know then nothing will. It was deliberate and I still say she was given the questions ahead of time. Nothing will convince me otherwise.
Doesn’t matter to me if it is or if it isn’t.
I won’t be voting for Fiorino or Rubio for any reason or under any circumstance.
Sadly, I do not think the medias normal manipulations are going to work this time. Poor media, and cronies that be.
It is deception by leading, a form of manipulation. You lead your audience into thinking something is inevitable, or that something is popular, thereby persuading some with the peer pressure of group think. It happens a lot. Don’t buy it. Any thinking person knows 3 things:
1. These polls are run by people with agendas
2. There is a natural ebb and flow
3. It is way too early to matter
If it’s true Twitch (because she twitches when she talks) should be easy to take down with her HP record and her RINO’ish view points on just about everything that qualifies her as GOPe, or professional politician wannabe, something the public just does not want.
But I think this is more wishful thinking on behalf of CNN and all the other libtards.
Sure CNN, just go polling in Castro district of San Francisco and bingo.... fading Trump.
Polls this early don’t mean anything, but the overall trend is obvious to anyone who isn’t Frank Luntz.
“Finally.”
No bias there.
Too bad for them it’s not true.
It is crap. Most (all) other real polls show otherwise. Also, Trump is releasing detailed policy papers, taking open floor questions, etc. So much for their claim of no specifics.
PS “Hope and Change” was very specific, eh? LOL.
The front runners are all radical socialists. The government-enriched political regulator class is trying to lock its position in, but the remainder of the default process will take care of that notion. Money may be inflated, but useful products don’t grow on trees.
It is. Plenty of polls show differently. And even in this poll he’s not really crashing.
Trump should stop doing their interviews - make them beg him to come on their shows. Hillary and Bernie don’t do their shows - (and don’t think I’m equating Trump with them) it’s just that he is getting over exposed.
This CNN poll is bogus and contradicts all the other polls released this weekend.
I’ve thought for a while that the only reason we’re seeing polls with Trump in the lead is because his numbers are too high to manipulate without calling attention. iMHO
What kills me is how a poll they don’t like is an outlier but one they want is the gospel.
I can’t believe anyone would want Florina, seriously.
