It would be unconstitutional to disqualify a Muslim from the presidency because of religion, Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz said Sunday.
You know, the Constitution specifies there shall be no religious test for public office and I am a constitutionalist, the Texas senator said during the taping of Iowa Press at Iowa Public Television.
Cruz was about Ben Carsons televised statement that Islam is inconsistent with the U.S. Constitution. I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that, Carson said on NBCs Meet the Press.
Cruz also referred to the ongoing controversy raised in the media over whether Donald Trump should have corrected a man who incorrectly stated at a rally that President Obama is a Muslim and not an American. My view, listen. The presidents faith is between him and God. What Im going to focus on is his public policy record, Cruz said.
One area in which Cruz did not mind excluding Muslims, however, was from the ranks of refugees from Syria seeking asylum in the United States. He said they should settle in other Middle Eastern countries, citing concerns that some of the purported refugees may actually be terrorists.
I think the Christians are a very different circumstance because Christians are being persecuted, they are being persecuted directly for their faith and the Obama administration has abandoned Middle East Christians, Cruz said.
Several other Republican presidential candidates weighed in on the issue of Syrian refugees Saturday during a forum in Des Moines. Mike Huckabee agreed with Cruz that the U.S. should exclude Muslim refugees but accept Christians. Rick Santorum argued that even the Christians should be assisted in the region so they can return home when the violence ends.
Following his visit at Iowa Public Television, Cruz visited with restaurant-goers at the Machine Shed Restaurant in Urbandale for more light-hearted discussions while Iowans enjoyed their morning brunch.
We already have had one as president.
Ted is correct.
an Open Muslim would have never been elected president.
just that Manchurian candidate guy.
Ok. These guys better find a way to answer these questions because the only answer I’ve liked so far is Ben Carson’s.
The Constitution is not a suicide pact!
We all know there's no religious test in the Constitution. We didn't need the self aggrandizing lecture where Cruz once again tries to demonstrate he's the smartest guy in the room..
The fact that Cruz wouldn't/couldn't bring himself to state clearly that islam is a theocracy, and therefore incompatible with the United States Constitution and our form of Government is a HUGE disappointment.
One would've thought Cruz was smarter than to pander to the mooslimes, but that's exactly what he just did.
Up to about this point I kinda liked Cruz but after this, he's dead to me.
Because he isn’t as grand as his supporters wish. He is that eleven foot safety line when you needed twelve.
. Islam is unconstitutional
**************
Where’s it say that?
I respect Adams a great deal as a founder andca statesman; in all honesty, though, he would have been equally appalled at the thought of a Catholic, black, Jew, or woman on a national ticket.
Most of our founders were of biblical faith persuasions. And never imagined a Moslem getting into the presidency. The were concerned about foreign enrmy agents maybe getting elected - which is why they wrote the presidential qualifications clause of our Constitution. It was important to them but they didn’t envision how the ruling elite of our great nation would someday choose to trash it Nevertheless, our founders’ prescience has been vindicated these past six years, alas!
It’s not a religion. It’s a vile, dangerous cult.
“because of religion”
This is an important phrase he is using.
Yep, pandering to the mooslimes.
He was COMMENTING on Carson;s Answer with his own
It made perfect sense.
And neither was Carson. Which is why Cruz's statement is so troubling. Carson was being accused of being against the Constitution merely because he has the correct opinion that a Muslim should not be given the power of leadership over this country.
If Cruz is suggesting that Carson was advocating abandoning the Constitution, then Cruz is either pandering to the press or he is very misinformed.
And chaos and naked political opportunism ensued! lol
was he supposed to refuse to answere the question he was assked and look like a bozo? or hem and haw about like ONE would be candidate has done...and look like a bigger bozo??
He was honest and forthright
the constitution protects ALL “religions” FALSE and otherwise..thus far...ro some degree...
he said NOTHING about supporting the islamic DEVILS
For me? To better understand the Trump supporters.
Islam is diametrically opposed to the US Constitution of this country....Islamic Law always trumps any other law to a muslim.... Islam has as its goal the replacement of Western political and judicial systems with Islamic ones using our laws to attain that.
