Remember that the republican Establishment did this before, in 1980 with John Anderson.
It was laughable. Reagan still won 44 states, and swept the senate into republican control for the first time since 1954 and significantly increased the republican numbers in the House.

I commented earlier here by asking, where the Trump panic was in the article.
Articles like this do reveal panic though.
The publication that publishes it reveals that it is the entity that is panicking.
WND <<< a heaping helping of out of control panic

If Romney becomes a third party candidate against Trump, then Donald Trump will be president as all the dems who realize the made a mistake voting for Obama will vote for Romney -- not Hillary.
Ann Coulter might endorse Mitt happens, however.

Anderson even picked a Democrat as his running mate: Gov. Patrick J. Lucey of Wisconsin. (Illinois and Wisconsin— there is a balanced ticket!)
Would Romney pick Ryan again or find some “moderate” Democrat? Maybe Webb? Lieberman?

He could probably find a ballot line in New York — there are 8 ballot-qualified parties.

Romney won’t play this game.

They did it in 1980. Liberal former Republican John B. Anderson got 6.6% of the vote. Although from the history, it sounds like he was so liberal he took votes away from Carter instead of Reagan.

Romney's going to be 70 soon, and he doesn't have the energy or the interest for something like this.
But look at it this way. If Trump really is going to be the disaster that the party honchos claim he'll be, then if the party survives, the establishment will be running it for years or decades to come.
If it looks like Trump will get the nomination, they may just decide to get out of his way and let him do himself in. Getting in the way only makes them the fall guys, rather than Donald.

I think its absolutely hypocritical and crazy for the moderates to sit there and lecture conservatives about a third party and then turn around and practically advocate that for one of their own
The party faithful are hypocrites, and they also have the character flaw of blaming the voters when their candidates suck pond water.
