Carly Fiorina's troubling telecom past (Flashback to her Lucent Disaster)
Fortune ^ | 10/15/10 | Scott Woolley

Posted on 09/18/2015 9:00:53 AM PDT by jimbo123

Before she became the controversial CEO of HP, Senate candidate Carly Fiorina was a star at Lucent. What does her time at the telecom disaster say about her?

In the spring of 1999, Lucent Technology’s star executive Carly Fiorina pulled off yet another coup—or so it appeared. A tiny start-up called PathNet agreed to buy huge amounts of fiber-optic gear from Lucent, a deal worth at least $440 million and potentially as much as $2.1 billion. The agreement Fiorina negotiated “potentially represents the single largest fiber supply agreement to a network operator in the U.S,” according to a triumphant press release.

While it was unclear how a tiny company like PathNet, with barely 100 employees and all of $1.6 million in annual revenue, could swing such as massive purchase, Wall Street didn’t seem to care about such details. The day following the announcement Lucent’s stock jumped 3%.

-snip-

Dig under the surface, however, and the story grows more complicated and less flattering. The Lucent that Fiorina walked away from, taking with her $65 million in performance-linked pay, was not at all what it appeared. Nor were several of her division’s biggest sales, including the giant PathNet deal.

And after 9/11 she expressed how Islam was the world’s greatest civilization — such class.

Exactly. Fio-RINO can take “credit” for sticking everyone with SOX due to her booking revenue illegally at Lucent.

Class is over rated. Especially when what we need is a strong energetic leader who loves our country and isn’t afraid to address the difficult areas and sacred cows. Hypocrites, flim flam artists and other phonies are often very personable and “classy”.

Carly has no experience in developing innovative solutions, in starting a business, in making deals. She gave away the farm at Lucent & HP. She is pushy and strident, confrontational, talks from a script and plays dirty, looking for special treatment for being female and then striking out with just the same treatment she whined about.

Save me from class and give me a straight talker who will get non partisan experts, develop a plan and see it through. Some one authentic, self confident but able to laugh at himself and adjust when new data comes in. One who loves America and doesn’t think the Islamic civilization is the greatest thing since white bread!

“...And in terms of conservative bona fides, you do know she is the daughter of a well known and principled conservative judge right?”
*******************************************************************************************************
Being the child of a conservative is FAR from a guarantee that the child will be a true conservative. Exhibit 1: The doofus progressive Ron Reagan, Jr., son of constitutional conservative icon Ronald Reagan.

So don’t try to bathe Carly in the supposed conservatism of a parent and expect that to wash away any of her political “sins”..it adds not one whit to any conservative bona fides.

By the way, your “concern” is showing...just in time to coincide with the mainstream establishment’s attempts to promote Carly.

Whoa! Serious stuff.

Is there a statute of limitations on fraud; failure to follow GAAP?

Don’t forget she also ignored sanctions on Iran

As for statute of limitations, unknown to me but others might know.
Now whether or not she’d actually feel any punitive measures for it is another question.

Lucent wasn’t/isn’t a wired long distance company. Neither is HP.

Someone please tell me what Fiorina did or was so good at that AT&T promoted her, gave her Lucent to run and paid her ridiculous amounts of money to do it. Or was she simply the beneficiary of the EEOC/Affirmative Action policies of AT&T?

“She didnt invent vendor financing. Cisco, Nortel, the entire industry did it.”

Isn’t that sort of like saying “gee mom, all my friends smoke crack, I’m going to use it too”.? Just because everyone else is doing something doesn’t mean it is a good idea.

“Secretary to CEO? How unlikely.”

Exactly right. Sort of like unknown Muslim from Kenya to President of the U.S.

Epic failure in both cases.

Well, she did have ONE success to her name:
On the news of her departure, Hewlett Packard stock jumped up and made the company worth nearly three billion dollars more in stock value in one day.
Just on word of her departure alone.
That’s a success!
How many people can brag that a company ended up being worth more after they left simply BECAUSE they left?

You didn't paste the damning statement, that Lucent under Fiorina's leadership lent tiny companies millions so they could buy Lucent products. Then they counted all that as income and hid the debt on the books. Classic corporate con job to pump up the stock short-term and rape the investors while she got out with millions. She's a crook.

Personally, I made a very, very, good bit of money over this “disaster”. Then I paid cash for a new car and moved to a bigger house.
I had no problem with it - and quiet frankly wouldn’t mind such a “disaster” striking again.
