I resent Obama getting all the credit for ISIL. Juan McCain is just as responsible and he’s a military hero. He knows what he’s doing.

From looking at the hardware he’s putting in Syria, I’d say he’s getting serious.

Saudi Arabia could be taken out in a week. Get rid of SA and most of the world’s problems will soon disappear. Do they even have an army?

I’m not for either dog in that fight.

Not for Obama, who always has the wrong motive, or Putin, who nearly always has the wrong motive, while both ALWAYS lie about their motive.

You mean that I will have more in common with Putin’s goals than the POTUS?

Man...is the US far gone now or what? (rhetorical...of course)

The Soviets deployed about 100,000 troops at a time to Afghanistan, which was not enough to occupy and conduct counter-insurgency. I’d like to see a single surge of 100,000 to Syria as soon as possible. They could not hold the country, but they do not need to. They could take the country with the help of the Syrian Army and end the effectiveness of ISIS and Al Qaeda as opposition forces. If the Russians then leave, there is no enemy to strike, just a stable government, which will be a relief to most Syrians even though Assad will still be in charge. I’m cheering for Putin, both because he’s chosen the right side and because he’s opposing Obama - who always chooses the wrong side.

One could assume that Putin might want to do the same job in the US and western Europe.

Future historians will regard driving the entire Middle East into Russian geopolitical hands as perhaps Obama’s greatest foreign policy triumph.

Or screw-up, depending on who’s discussing it.

Propaganda. The West always inflates its influence in the ME. Putin plays that game too. This wahabi, sunni, shiite insanity is its own creature. The ME has always been powder keg. Yes a lot of mistakes have been made by Bush, Obama, etc. But this fraternal hatred has been going on for centuries. This ISIS insanity would have come at some point regardless of any actions by the USA or Russia or Britain or anyone. These tribal bloodthirsty sects know this but they also know how easy it is to fool the West into sending them $.

Judging by the post date of this news article (and it is a blood chilling quote) that means as soon as Putin finished talking the operation started.

This is being reported in real time now:

The Russians and Putin have named the mess in Syria for what it is - a terrorist operation, operating under the benign guidance and purview of the Current Occupant now squatting in the White, er, “Rainbow” Hut.

Along with the removal of Hosni Mubarak in Egypt, Muammar Gaddafi in Libya, and the armed insurrection in Yemen, the Muslim Brotherhood was intent on taking down the autocratic but relatively secular regimes of other Islamic countries as well, Syria among them. The word among the Current Regime was that Bashar al-Assad had to be taken down as well.

That presented a complication. Russia had already established a mutual assistance agreement with Syria, in exchange for a Russian naval base in eastern Mediterranean in Tartus, and they had a vested interest in protecting Syria. At the same time, Russia also built up relations with Iran, and to facilitate transport of natural gas from Iran to the Mediterranean, a pipeline was to be built from Iran across Iraq to the port near the Russian naval base at Tartus.

But the overthrow of Assad would interrupt this collaborative effort, and the Russians have had to throw a little muscle in the fight, making Assad, Russia and Iran de facto allies. Thus we have this situation today, of ISIS wanting to break up this alliance, and the US, however wrong-headedly, wanting to remove Assad. Thus, the Current Regime now squatting in the White Hut ends fighting for the SAME objective as ISIS. In a word, Obama owns ISIS.

And the ISIS leadership is NOT composed of good guys.
