Donald Trump is the ultimate wild card...There is one candidate, however, who is nicely positioned.
Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas has also watched Trump eat at his poll numbers but has remained in the upper tier of the contests. He has the money and following to be relevant throughout the Republican race.
Of 15 candidates in the field not named Trump, Cruz is the contender most likely to share supporters with Trump, or woo them later.
Yes, Carson is an outsider and Cruz is a member of the Senate in an anti-politician environment. But Cruz has solid anti-establishment credentials. Just ask his colleagues who blamed him for the 2013 government shutdown related to the failed effort to kill funding for the Affordable Care Act.
Though Cruz is a senator, his style is more like an activist. He refuses to compromise.
Cruz has another advantage over his rivals.
If he can be competitive in the early contests, which offer few delegates, hell have a big score waiting for him on March 1. With Perry out of the race, Cruz has a nearly unobstructed path to the 155 delegates at stake in the Texas primary.
Trump, with his name recognition, could create problems, particularly if hes coming out of South Carolina like a house on fire. But its likely that Cruz, the most popular Republican in Texas, will rout the competition.
A win in Texas and other Super Tuesday elections would give Cruz momentum, making him a front-runner or the alternative to Trump.
No matter what happens with Trump, Cruz is prepared for the long haul.

Well, if you’re trapped I a room with a tiger, do you poke it with a sharp stick, or try to be nice? Perry, Krispy, Grahamnesty, Paul and Jindal have opted for the sharp stick approach. That hasn’t worked terribly well for them.
To the Bobsy twins-— I really, really wish I could reply to you — however, Ted Cruz has instructed us to mollify the Trumpets-— our future voters.
So, as a loyal Cruzador— “Go Donald!”
It’s a good, considered thought- might be so.
Har, har, everyone’s a comedian these days. Sheesh! :-)
“If I don’t win, this whole thing will have been a waste of time.”-—Donald Trump, today.
Doesn’t sound like someone whose planning on losing.
I hope he's as smart as I think he is.
“Who is going to get these voters?”
If Trump pulls out and the choices are Hillary and Bush: No one.
Trump is smart. He’s keeping Cruz on his good side, because once Cruz is not able to see that he can get the numbers for the nomination, he’ll endorse Trump and Trump will ROLL across the rest of the primary states all the way to the nomination.
I really don’t *think* the choice will come down to Hillary/Jeb, when all is said and done. But, the independents and Reagan Democrats who Trump is appealing to won’t vote for anyone bland, anyone who will offer more of the same. They’ll stay home, go hunting or fishing, but they just will not vote.
its early so your counting doesn’t matter till the first 2 primaries. Once those numbers come in you can either be wrong or right
Cruz and Trump are both smart. If either wins the nomination, the other will endorse and campaign for the other. Cruz will be able to get the Christian conservatives to the polls in huge numbers.
If Trump pulls out and the choices are Hillary and Bush: No one.
if trump drops out and the choices are Hillary or Cruz then Cruz will get the Reagan Dems and to hell with the squishes.
Dave Brat kicked Eric Cantor’s behind and had probably 1/3 of the money Cantor had. People think that money will always win out - it might keep them in the race a little longer, but it in no way means a person is going to win. Look at Heb Bush for instance.
I agree.
Cruz for AG.
I am one of those Reagan democrats and I support Cruz, which blows your theory all to Hell.
“its early so your counting doesnt matter till the first 2 primaries. Once those numbers come in you can either be wrong or right”
Haha. Yeah maybe Cruz can shoot lasers out of his eyes and stun Trump.
It’s the same as 2008 when it was supposed to be Fred Thompson. Fred stayed stuck at 12% from when he declared to when he dropped out right after South Carolina.
Anybody for Cruz is already for him. Should Trump implode I’m sure Ted will get a small uptick but it won’t be enough and frankly I don’t think Trump is going to implode at this point.
He’s already weathered it longer than he was expected to and not only weathered it but broke away from the pack.
Keep on wishing though. Good luck.
“I am one of those Reagan democrats and I support Cruz, which blows your theory all to Hell.”
Oh well if Cruz has you I don’t see how he can possibly lose do you?
I mean one more vote in Oklahoma will certainly help Cruz carry Ohio and Florida and Pennsylvania.
Haha.
No candidate, in my memory, since 1960, has led in almost all 50 states for 2+ months. Excepting incumbent presidents running for 2nd term, of course.
I doubt Cruz will get the Reagan Democrats. IMO, if Trump gets out of the race, they’ll go hunting or fishing. Just not show up at the polls. All the wishful thinking in the world won’t get them to the polls for Cruz or anyone else.
