~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Dover Air Force Base, Delaware

Dover Air Force Base or Dover AFB is a United States Air Force base located 2 miles southeast of the city of Dover, Delaware.

Dover AFB is home to the 436th Airlift Wing (436 AW) of the Air Mobility Command (AMC), known as the "Eagle Wing", and the AMC-gained 512th Airlift Wing (512 AW) of the Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC), referred to as the "Liberty Wing".

It was the only base to solely operate the massive C-5 Galaxy, with two active flying squadrons (the 3rd Airlift Squadron, which now operates the C-17 Globemaster III, and 9th Airlift Squadron) and two Air Force Reserve flying squadrons (the 326th Airlift Squadron and the 709th Airlift Squadron).

Dover AFB is also the home for the largest military mortuary in the Department of Defense, and has been used for processing military personnel killed in both war and peacetime; the remains of those killed overseas are traditionally brought to Dover before being transferred to family. The Charles C. Carson Center for Mortuary Affairs has also been used to identify remains of civilians in certain exceptional circumstances.

Dover Air Force Base was used in 1978 for the victims of the Jonestown mass murder/suicide, in 1986 for identifying the remains of the crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger, and in 2003 for the crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia. It was also a major site for identifying the remains of military personnel killed in the 9/11 attacks.

The "Eagle Wing" is a subordinate of Eighteenth Air Force headquartered with the Air Mobility Command at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. The Eagle Wing consists of operations, maintenance, mission support and medical groups and 14 staff divisions. The wing has more than 4,000 active-duty military and civilian employees.

Home to the C-5 Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster III aircraft, the Eagle Wing flies hundreds of missions throughout the world and provides 25 percent of the Nation's strategic airlift capability, projecting global reach to over 100 countries around the globe.

I'm working everyday this week to let those that want last minute vacations take them.

Then I'll start taking more time off this Fall/Winter.

The boy is transitioning to College quite well; he has a good school/work schedule set -up.

Went to Dover on a TDY to help identify the bodies that were returned from the Canary Islands in the Spring of 1977. AF bases asked for volunteers to help the pathologists with the bodies of 400+ people that were killed in the collision of two large planes. I only saw the inside of a hanger there and slept on a cot for a couple of days before being sent back to Keesler.

Good roadtrip but they have a very sad detail. But very necessary to show honor to our fallen heroes.

Good thread, Lauren!

Good evening, Connie, and thank you for the tributes to our troops. *hugs*

Are your commutes getting any cooler? Seeing any critters in the heat?

We had rain mostly all weekend. It was nice.

I was surprised when I caught a space A flight from Iraq to Dover that the nearest major civilian airport is Philly, not BWI.

12 of us caught a Van at $80 each to get to Philly.
