Mulvaney: Boehner Lacks Enough GOP Votes for Re-Election, His Future Depends on Dems Bail Him Out
Breitbart News Network ^ | 8 Sep 2015 | Matthew Boyle

Posted on 09/08/2015 6:52:45 PM PDT by george76

Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-SC) , one of the 28 Republicans who publicly supports replacing House Speaker Rep. John Boehner with a Republican alternative, told Breitbart News on Tuesday that Boehner does not have enough support within the Republican conference to win re-election with just Republican votes.

Therefore, Mulvaney said, should there be a vote on a privileged resolution on a motion to vacate the chair of the House of Representatives — a fancy term for a vote to remove Boehner from the speakership — the only way Boehner can keep his job is if Democrats vote for him to bail him out.

“The math depends on the Democrats, doesn’t it?.. I think if all the Democrats were to vote against John, he’d lose the Speakership, but I don’t think anyone knows where the Democrats stand.”

...

Boehner’s team is certainly terrified

...

If Boehner needs Democrat votes to win re-election, Mulvaney said that would put Republicans in Congress in an unprecedented situation.

“Everybody is scratching their heads about that one,” Mulvaney said. “Do you want a leader of your party who is in that position because of support from the other party? It’s not a question I think we’ve dealt with before. It certainly would be cause for some internal discussion and I don’t honestly know if John would even want to put us in that position.”

Mulvaney said he also believes that if and when such a situation arises, that Boehner would consider resigning from the speakership.

...

Mulvaney noted that he has a hard time answering his constituents back in South Carolina what the difference is between McConnell’s GOP Senate and the Senate when it was run by now Minority Leader Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) under Democratic control.

It is goddamned simple! if he needed Democrat votes to remain Speaker and he stays Speaker and will not resign in spite of the votes of the MAJORITY of Republicans then he is a DEMOCRAT.

Boehner will do whatever it takes to remain Speaker.

As far as Boehner is concerned, he’ll see the prospect of losing the Speakership as betrayal. Therefore, Boehner will think he is fully justified in using whatever methods it takes to retain what Boehner thinks is rightfully his.

I’m quite sure Boehner is already furious with conservatives over the loss of Eric Cantor and this will be another excuse for Boehner to stick his thumb in the eye of conservatives.

A man with any kind of dignity would resign at this point.

Oh, wait... We are talking about Boehner. I forgot for a hot minute.

“If and when a vote to vacate the chair happens.
And RATs vote to keep Bonehead in Power.

Trump will jump 15-20 points overnight.”

And that’s why I believe if Boner doesn’t have the votes, he will step down. The GOP House Members will know beforehand what the numbers are, and Boner will get a visit telling him he has to go. The GOP is not in a position to pi$$ off any of their constituents because they know their seats are on the line, and ALL of them are up for re-election unlike the Senate. Any deal with the RATS would necessarily devolve into “power sharing,” or ironclad support deals for pet RAT legislation. This action would end the Republican Party.

“It is pretty crazy the other party can vote in their election.”

It isn’t a Republican election. The Speaker of the House is the leader of the House of Representatives. He or she is elected by the entire membership of the House. Typically each party unites behind a candidate and the majority party’s candidate wins. However if the majority party is split, it is possible for the minority party candidate to win.

The Speaker does not even have to be a sitting member of the House. The House can elect anyone to the position.

We tend to forget that when the Constitution was written there were no organized political parties. Many of the founding fathers hated the concept of organized political parties. The House was expected to represent the people. In theory the people would elect model citizens from their districts to represent them in Congress. As issues arose, these community leaders would dispassionately debate the issue and vote based on the will of the people of the district and not the dictates of the Speaker or faction leaders. It was intended the nonpartisan representatives would elect a virtuous, respected, and nonpartisan member as Speaker to preside over the proceedings of the House.

The founders understood partisan political parties were poisonous to a republic. As soon as members of the House owe more loyalty to a party and its financial backers, than they do to their constituents at home, they cease being representatives of the people and protectors of liberty. We see the consequences today in a bloated and increasingly oppressive federal government and a Congress frequently and deliberately voting against the desires of the people.

The founding fathers would be appalled by today’s House of Representatives and its leaders.
