Labor Day is a national legal holiday that is over 100 years old. Over the years, it has evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general "last fling of summer" festival.

It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class by the Knights of Labor in 1882 in New York. In 1884, the Knights held a large parade in New York City celebrating the working class. The parade was held on the first Monday in September. The Knights passed a resolution to hold all future parades on the same day, designated by them as Labor Day.

The Socialist Party held a similar celebration of the working class on May 1. This date eventually became known as May Day, and was celebrated by Socialists and Communists in commemoration of the working man. In the U.S., the first Monday in September was selected to reject any identification with Communism.

In the late 1880's, labor organizations began to lobby various state legislatures for recognition of Labor Day as an official state holiday. The first states to declare it a state holiday in, 1887, were Oregon, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. Then in 1894, Congress passed a law recognizing Labor Day as an official national holiday.

Today, Labor Day is observed not only in the U.S. but also in Canada, and in other industrialized nations. While it is a general holiday in the United States, its roots in the working class remain clearer in European countries.

For a lot of people, Labor Day means two things: a day off and the end of summer. But why is it called Labor Day? Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women.

Membership in labor unions in the United States reached an all-time high in the 1950s when about 40 percent of the work force belonged to unions. Today, union membership is less than 12 percent of the working population and closing in on just 11 percent. Labor Day now carries less significance as a celebration of working people and more as the end of summer. Schools, government offices and businesses are closed on Labor Day so people can get in one last trip to the beach or have one last cookout before the weather starts to turn colder.

Yes, I will have the day off for Labor Day.

Is it just me, or does not working on Labor Day seem odd to everyone? :)

I will probably take a long motorcycle ride.

((HUGS))) in return.

Computer woes continue - we need to get a restore disc. I'm posting from Mrs. Mac Nessa's tablet. I'm dredging up my graphics from page source, copying and pasting.

We grilled this evening rather than tomorrow. Our young friend Jean-Michel is going back to school tomorrow and we wanted to have him as part of the feast. John-Man presided at the grill while I did some plumbing repair.

WOOOOHOOOO!!!...on you finally getting a good new job with NO WEEKENDS! Or nights! Now we don’t have to worry about you out on those winding roads after dark in a snow-or-rainstorm!

I’m so thankful that Robert is going to be ok now. How scared y’all must have been for him! I pray he continues to improve and the doctors keep on top of his condition.

Thanks so very much!
How are you and Lin-dah doing?

I thought of you when I read about that Harley dealer hosting muslims in DC.
Any word on how that finally turned out?

Hi Prof!
(VERY GENTLE HUG & THE CHASTEST OF SMOOCHES RETURNED)

Yes, it’s been quite a roller coaster ride for sure!
I have missed all of you soooooo very much!
It will be great to be back.
Heck, it’s great right NOW!
LOL

I will not be able to hang out late on week nights, though.
Have to get used to a new schedule!

Thank you for your good wishes for my Bro!
I appreciate that very much!

Hi Sissy!
Thank you!

I am very happy, too!
Just working there for the past two weeks has made a tremendous amount of difference in my pain levels!

Robert is coming back slowly, and it frustrates him not to be able to do the things he used to do.
He has always been very athletic, and loved to run and lift weights and stuff.
Docs say NO for now.
I am not sure that will ever change for him, but I sure hope so!

I know the Dealership well. Back in the 90’s I attended the Yellow Ribbon Run and Rolling Thunder, 9 years in a row. The night before the run, Ft. Washington HD had a giant pig roast in honor of the vets. There were sometimes thousands who attended. Black, White, Outlaws, Angels, Rival patches, all of us put differences aside to honor our vets.

I was really disturbed when i read about the farrakhan thing there.

I guess the pig roast is cancelled.

I have the day off, but when i don’t work, i don’t get paid, so it’s kind of a lousy holiday for me.
