The FReeper Canteen Presents...
Happy Labor Day!
September 7, 2015 |

H I S T O R Y |
Labor Day is a national legal holiday that is over 100 years old. Over the years, it has evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general "last fling of summer" festival. It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class by the Knights of Labor in 1882 in New York. In 1884, the Knights held a large parade in New York City celebrating the working class. The parade was held on the first Monday in September. The Knights passed a resolution to hold all future parades on the same day, designated by them as Labor Day. The Socialist Party held a similar celebration of the working class on May 1. This date eventually became known as May Day, and was celebrated by Socialists and Communists in commemoration of the working man. In the U.S., the first Monday in September was selected to reject any identification with Communism. In the late 1880's, labor organizations began to lobby various state legislatures for recognition of Labor Day as an official state holiday. The first states to declare it a state holiday in, 1887, were Oregon, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. Then in 1894, Congress passed a law recognizing Labor Day as an official national holiday. Today, Labor Day is observed not only in the U.S. but also in Canada, and in other industrialized nations. While it is a general holiday in the United States, its roots in the working class remain clearer in European countries. |
For a lot of people, Labor Day means two things: a day off and the end of summer. But why is it called Labor Day? Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women. Membership in labor unions in the United States reached an all-time high in the 1950s when about 40 percent of the work force belonged to unions. Today, union membership is less than 12 percent of the working population and closing in on just 11 percent. Labor Day now carries less significance as a celebration of working people and more as the end of summer. Schools, government offices and businesses are closed on Labor Day so people can get in one last trip to the beach or have one last cookout before the weather starts to turn colder. |

So what about you? How are you celebrating Labor Day?
Please remember that The Canteen is here to support and entertain our troops and veterans and their families, and is family friendly.

To Be Continued . . .
September 2015
Death has been swallowed up in victory.
1 Corinthians 15:54
Growing up in the 1950s, I often attended the Saturday matinee at a local movie theater. Along with cartoons and a feature film, there was an adventure serial that always ended with the hero or heroine facing an impossible situation. There seemed to be no way out, but each episode concluded with the words To Be Continued . . .
The apostle Paul was no stranger to life-threatening situations. He was imprisoned, beaten, stoned, and shipwrecked as he sought to take the good news of Jesus Christ to people. He knew that someday he would die, but he never considered that to be the end of the story. Paul wrote to the followers of Jesus in Corinth, When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: Death has been swallowed up in victory (1 Cor. 15:54). The passion of Pauls life was telling others that Jesus our Savior gave His life on the cross so that through faith in Him we can receive forgiveness for all our sins and have eternal life.
We are not like the movie hero who always escapes certain death. The day will come when our earthly lives will end either by death or Christs return. But by Gods grace and mercy, the story of your life and mine is to be continued.
Father, we praise You for Your gift of eternal life and say with Paul, Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 15:57).
In life and death, Christ is our hope.
Paul wrote chapter 15 of 1 Corinthians in response to those in the church at Corinth who denied that Jesus rose bodily from the dead. This chapter is divided into two sections. In verses 1-34, Paul discusses the reasons to believe that Jesus did in fact walk out of His tomb. In verses 35-57, Paul talks about the need for and the nature of our resurrected bodies. These verses lead to Pauls concluding point in verse 58. While waiting for our resurrection, give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. J.R. Hudberg

Kinds follows the path of legalizing the smoking of rope. These people often take a few days to a lifetime off in a haze of smoke.

I am celebrating labor day by doing as little of labor as possible, and catching up with my Canteen family!
I am sorry I have been MIA, lots going on!
First and best news!
I have a new job!!
WOO HOO!
My days of heavy patient care and working on the floor are finally over!
I was offered a position as a Medical Records Clerk/Receptionist.
It is Mon-Fri 9am to 3pm, and pays well enough that I only have to work 30 hours per week to make MORE than I was at the other joint!
NO MORE WEEKENDS!
NO MORE having to work major holidays!
Now, I can be with Mr B and whats left of my small family on Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc!
;0)
Speaking of family, we had quite a scare regarding my brother Robert.
He became severely winded after going up a flight of stairs where he works, and was near collapse when the rushed him to the hospital.
Seems his heart was only fuctioning at 25% !!!!!!!!!!!!!
They had to shock his heart to get it back to a normal rate, as it was 150 bpm.
The good news is, he does not need major surgery, and there is no blockage.
It apparently has a glitch in its electrical impulse, and that is causing it to “misfire”.
They are controlling it with meds (so far).
He is okay, but very tired.
I was terrified of losing him, as he is my rock and one of my heroes!
I hope all of you are doing well, and enjoying this long weekend!
I have missed you all very much, and it’s great to be back with you!
((((((((((Hugs alla ‘round!))))))

Good evening, HJ....of course retired folks can celebrate! Any excuse is good.
You can celebrate for/with your kids, and Piper.
I’m going to pick up a couple of my Mom’s friends and bring them home to visit for a couple hours.
