US warns Russia against more aid to Assad amid new violence

BEIRUT (AP) — Anti-government violence erupted Saturday in a southern Syrian province that had largely stayed on the sidelines of the country's civil war. Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports suggesting that Russia was planning to expand its military support for Syrian President Bashar Assad prompted a warning from the U.S. that such actions could lead to a confrontation with coalition forces.

The violence in Sweida province, a stronghold of the Druze minority sect, followed the killing of a prominent cleric in rare explosions Friday that claimed the lives of at least 25 others, activists and pro-government media said. Rioters holding the government responsible for the cleric's death destroyed the statue of late Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad and besieged security offices, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and other activist groups said.

In Washington, the State Department issued a statement after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry called Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to express concern over unconfirmed reports "suggesting an imminent enhanced Russian military build-up" in Syria.

No good can ever come from supporting Jihadis. Even if they are fighting our enemies.

That's a fact. This situation is the biggest no-win out there. We're supporting 'rebels' that end up being ISIS members or affiliates. Russia is supporting Iranian and Hezbollah personnel. What a f-ing mess.

I’ll take a wild guess that Putin will spend millions in Syria, the hysteria will go off the meter in the DC dimwit establishment and they will spend billions upon billions and still lose to whomever. Face it folks the RepubloCrat establishment is nothing but losers, say hello to President Trump.

I’m still trying to figure out what Obama is trying to achieve in Syria, except to turn the entire population into refugees and hand the country to ISIS.

I swear to God that Russia is the only common-sense actor in this Cluster-dance, which makes me want to bang my head against a wall.

Agree. Jihadists are a worse enemy than any relatively secular regime, even communists. Just ask Osama bin Ladin, our old “ally” against the Soviets in Afghanistan.

I was gonna say - I’m sure that was Pootie-Poot’s reaction.

Yikes - a community organizer with the football never more than 50 feet away from him at all times.

No one wins in that scenario...

Position A... ISIS wins. Middle east dominated by radical sunni Islamic caliphate that commits terrorist actions and invades Europe. Massive war results.

Position B. Assad and Iranian backed Iraqi government win. Thus Iran, Russia and China win too. Iran gains a land bridge from Tehran to the Israeli border. China and Russia gain dominance in the region. War between this new state and Israel is inevitable and likely goes nuclear.

It seems Obama tends to pick which ever muslim leader or faction which will be most oppressive or unstable.

Because Assad, not ISIS, is the worst thing going on in Syria...

The headline should read,

“Saudi Arabia, via the US, warns Russia against destroying their proxy army ISIS in Syria”.

Saudi Arabia knows if Russia sends troops, then say “bye bye” to ISIS and Saudi’s dream to control a gas pipe line to Europe.

Obama is hopping mad that Russia is helping to kill his ISIL/”rebel” buddies in Syria.
