Ohio is poised to become the second state in this country to ban abortion because of a fetal diagnosis of Down syndrome this fall. As a pro-choice woman who has a 7-year-old daughter with Down syndrome, I find this absolutely appalling.
This is an issue that hits close to home for me: If I had had a prenatal diagnosis, I would have obtained an abortion. Today, I am beyond grateful that I didnt. But I cannot ever in any circumstances imagine insisting others not have that right.
STORY: Moms Emotional Facebook Post About Baby With Down Syndrome Goes Viral
Studies vary, but anywhere from 67 percent to 85 percent of women who learn their baby has Down Syndrome terminate their pregnancies, according to a 2012 University of South Carolina review published in the medical journal Prenatal Diagnosis. Ironically, I asked my doctor several times for an amniocentesis. She talked me out of it, emphasizing that the blood screening tests Id taken boasted over a 90-percent detection rate. The uneasiness and anxiety I experienced throughout my pregnancy were blown off as first-mom jitters. (Maybe you need to go on Zoloft, the head of perinatology told me after I peppered him with questions during my 18-week ultrasound.)

“My wife and I actually had that discussion. We had our first child later in life. Because of our age, they recommended testing for Downs in utero,. There was a very small chance that the test itself would harm the baby. It took about 30 seconds of discussion for us to agree that we wouldn’t have the test as we wouldn’t abort the baby even if it came back positive for Downs. “
We were “encouraged” by the State of California to have my wife tested when she had our third child at 42 ( 14 years after the first two ). We went through the agony of the waiting but as you point out we would not have terminated the pregnancy for Downs ( which is what the State hoped we would do if the results were positive). We now have a 32 year old daughter who is an absolute delight. Lifetime parenting has been wonderful. I want to cry when I see the PP videos. Mengle could not be worse than these people.
Let’s just kill a baby because it doesn’t measure up to ethereal standards of perfection.
Why stop with Downs’ Syndrome? If you want to kill, there’s always a justification for it.
Preserving and treasuring human life, that’s hard.
AH!.. Planned UN-Parenthood advocate..
I would adopt her.
no ones posted this so...this ghoul would be embraced by Hitler. He would kill her child too
[[If I Knew My Daughter Had Down Syndrome, I Would Have Aborted Her All Women Should Have That Right]]
Yep- all women should ‘have the right to MURDER”
It’s funny that women who believe this are generally l iberals and liberals would go absolutely mental (but I repeat myself) over the idea that some logger might crush a spotted owl egg when they cut down a tree with a spotted owl nest in it by accident- Spotted owl egg omelets anyone
Then you would have callously destroyed an individual who belongs to a group which contains some of the most sincere, loving beings that ever lived.
Down's syndrome "victims" do nothing but bring love into every family they touch, and they teach everyone around them about the true meaning of love.
They are some of the most inspiring human beings to ever walk the earth, and any family to whom they belong becomes stronger and more blessed.
ask these liberals if it would be ok to abort a child if it was determined to be a homosexual or liberal.
i’d bet they’d change their tune
And if this woman’s 10-year-old daughter gets muscular dystrophy she’ll bury her alive in the backyard.
No one has a “right” to murder.
We were asked if we wanted testing and I was only 27 when I had my daughter. I said “Why? Nothing would stop me from having this baby”. My husband agreed. Even the doctor agreed. But he said he was obligated to offer the tests. And he worked for a Catholic hospital.
I would love to see as law if you decide to abort a bay you had to be sterilized. that is as about pro choice as I can get.

I work in a children’s hospital. When I started there 11 years ago, Downs patients were common. Now they’re a rarity and we all know why.
I also suspect this woman is a liar. Most prenatal care includes screening for Downs these days so it’s odd that someone had a Downs kid without knowing ahead of time.
I believe it was Peter Sanger who has argued that parents should have the right to kill a child up to 3 months old, because what if there is an un-diagnosed disability or birth injury.
I’ve never met a person with Downs that wasn’t cheerful and pleasant.....just saying!!!
well, the next step is biogenetically engineering babies — so “eliminating” all kids with even the least amount of “difficulties” / sarc
Thank you for the link to this beautiful story. We need positive thought to offset the culture of death around us.

It’s very possible. There have been a few lawsuits where couples were tested but the results came back wrong and the baby really had Downs. The couples sued saying “we would have aborted if we knew the child had downs”.
On the flip side of that some babies are tested and come back positive for downs and the parents abort only to find out later the test was wrong when the aborted baby was studied in pathology.
