President Obama Renames Alaska’s Mt. McKinley To Denali, Social Media Erupts

Continuing to flex his executive muscle during his final term as commander-in-chief, President Barack Obama announced Sunday that Alaska’s Mount McKinley was being renamed Denali.

The president used his executive power to restore the mountain to its “Alaska Native name, which has deep cultural significance to the tallest mountain in North America,” reports The New York Times.

The move came on the eve of Mr. Obama’s trip to Alaska, where he will spend three days promoting aggressive action to combat climate change, and is part of a series of steps he will make there meant to address the concerns of Alaska Native tribes.

The mountain’s former name has long been regarded in what The Times notes “as an example of cultural imperialism in which a Native American name with historical roots.”

The 20,237-foot mountain and the tallest in North America was renamed in honor of President William McKinley, who was assassinated six months into his term in 1901.

As expected, social media users responded to the change with praise and condemnation. Here are some tweets:

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, who had pushed legislation for years to change the name, said Alaskans were “honored” to recognize the mountain as Denali.

“I’d like to thank the president for working with us to achieve this significant change to show honor, respect, and gratitude to the Athabascan people of Alaska,” Murkowski said in a video message recorded atop the mountain’s Ruth Glacier, with cloudy snow-capped peaks behind her.

Obama will not personally visit the peak during his stay in Alaska, which runs through Wednesday. He’ll spend much of the trip in Anchorage, south of the peak, where he will attend a State Department-sponsored meeting on climate change, titled GLACIER/Global Leadership in the Arctic Conference.

President McKinley had never even been to Alaska much less had anything to ever do with that mountain. Somewhere along the line someone just named it out of thin air for that president.
It never should have been changed from Denali in reality.

This and being forced to get Bin Laden might have been the only two things he got right in his Presidency.
I’m sure some day Obama will have a mountain of manure named after him, but THAT would be deserving.
