Mitchell, a former assistant district attorney, says his comments were not an endorsement of shoplifting.
A University of Wisconsin-Madison official claims laws against shoplifting are just an excuse to over-police minority communities.
I just dont think that they should be prosecuting cases for people who steal from Wal-Mart, said Everett Mitchell, director of community relations for the university, during an on-campus event. I dont think [with] Target or all them other places, them big box stores that have insurance, they should be using the fact that people steal from there as justification to start engaging in aggressive police practices, right?
...
Mitchell, a former assistant district attorney, offered shoplifting as an example, suggesting that communities of color may prefer that police refrain from enforcing laws against theft from large retail chains because responding to such crimes leads to an increased police presence in neighborhoods where shoplifting is prevalent.
Mitchell also noted that police generally defend their actions by saying they are merely directing their focus toward high-crime areas, but rejected that explanation, saying, they do that all the time to justify why theyre going to over-police our children.

Walmart has effectively done just that.
Might as well stop prosecuting car thieves, jewelry store robberies, bank robberies, etc, etc, etc.
Because well, they have insurance.
Such an articulate man, a true representative of the University.
Why not just have Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Target deliver a free item each month to all people of color so that they don’t have to bother going into the store?
They used to institutionalize folks who babbled nonsense as a threat to themselves or others.
From each according to his deeds, to each according to his needs.
Some people actually believe that????
They probably wouldn’t get the specific items they prefer. Maybe each store should have a website where PoC can order whatever they want without paying.
Actually, what this guy is saying is fairly common in some liberal circles. I’ve been told by liberals that crime is no more prevalent in minority areas than it is in white areas. According to these liberals, if law enforcement policed the white suburbs the way they do the central cities, there would be no difference in the crime rates.
"Everything Free for People of Color."
What he is trying to say in his convoluted politically correct way is that "minority community" (Amish?) are much more prone to thievery than other Americans.
Let’s not prosecute anyone who robs Everett Mitchell house and car.
yep, Wal-Mart sold a big screen TV to a thief using our CC at 5:30 a.m.
got a pic of him, too !!!
and ..... nothing .......
Oh...never mind...
There are drive-bys on my street all the time, but it’s never reported on or investigated, and nobody ever goes to jail.
I wish the police cared about white people! :(
His black @$$ is showing...
This seems perfectly logical to me if you understand Wisconsin's university system. The regents and academics just take what they want from the taxpayers with no recourse. The taxpayers just have to accept it. So the next logical step is for those associated with the university to just take whatever they want or need. In a perverse sort of way it's more cost efficient than all the middle men in the tax collection process. Just eliminate the overheads and just take.
Considering how heavy handed some suburban areas are, the crime rates should be even lower. They have nothing better to do than look for petty offenses.
rather than prosecuting, store owners should be allowed to administer 20 lashes with a cat of nine tails in the parking lot for all to see
