Pope Francis sends letter praising gay children's book
The Guardian ^ | Aug. 28, 2015 | Rosie Scammell

Italian book that explores different family types including same sex was banned by mayor of Venice, but pontiff becomes unlikely supporter ... In the book, the egg encounters a pair of gay penguins, lesbian rabbits successfully bringing up a family, as well as other family models, including a single parent hippo, a mixed race dog couple, and kangaroos that have adopted polar bear cubs...

Now Pardi has found an unlikely supporter in Pope Francis, who through his staff has written to the author praising her work. “His holiness is grateful for the thoughtful gesture and for the feelings which it evoked, hoping for an always more fruitful activity in the service of young generations and the spread of genuine human and Christian values,” wrote Peter B Wells, a senior official at the Vatican secretariat of state.

The letter, dated 9 July and recently seen by the Guardian, was a response to a parcel of children’s books sent by Pardi to the pontiff in June. The collection from her publisher, Lo Stampatello, including seven or eight books which deal with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues (LGBT), was accompanied by a heartfelt letter from the author describing the attacks she has come under in recent months. ...

I was hoping this guy would end celibacy for priests and nuns and encourage marriage. Instead he moves toward legitimizing the worst traits of the church.

I guess God just gives the Cardinals a few suggestions and lets them pick from a list. This guy shouldn’t have even been considered and I don’t believe for a minute God had anything to do with it.

The problem is not so much that the Pope is a heretic, it’s that there is no contingency plan for something like this. There is no way to “recall” a Pope. Under canon law the Pope’s word on almost everything is final and not subject to review from this side of the pearly gates.

Unfortunately I see a huge crack up coming. The Roman Church is beginning to look a lot like the Anglican Communion with the gulf between the Episcopal wing of the church and the more conservative/traditionalist so wide that they have little in common.

How long can this last? What will conservative/trad Catholics do? Indeed, what can they do?

I have something to say. According to Catholic doctrine the pope is the vicar of Christ. Vicar is where we get the word vicarious. It means “stand in.” The pope is Christ’s representative according to doctrine. This doctrine is fundamental to Catholicism such that questioning it makes one a heretic.

Francis must have slept through when God said, “Honor thy father and mother.”

According to Catholic reports, the author of the gay friendly book wrote to the Pope. The Pope did not respond, directly. The Vatican sent a perfunctory reply to the author. End of story. The contents are unknown but presumably a “thank you” for her note was included.

I’m no fan of Pope Francis, in the worldly sense, but this was easy to source and so it’s hurtful to see a thread full of Pope bashing when in this one case he does not appear to be guilty and may not even know about it.

Although I realize that what I've read about this Pope may be substantially inaccurate if,by chance,it *is* accurate then as long as he remains in office John Paul II is *my* Pope.

I can really only come to one conclusion: public schools have done the job Dewy designed them for. People just can't make basic connections and build a systematic, governing philosophy. They're carried away by every wind of doctrine.

At least, if Cruz loses, I can give up any hope the country will be saved. I can move on.

Well, he did say that our good works will get us into heaven even though we don’t believe. My Bible says your good works without belief will only get you into hell. Guess he has not read THE Book. And he is now going to be the global warming guru. Obama’s best butt kissing buddy.

...including a single parent hippo...

If the singleness is the result of widowhood (for example) that's fine.

...a mixed race dog couple...

No problem there.

...and kangaroos that have adopted polar bear cubs...

So is he fine with a human couple seeing their pet chimp as a child?

“His holiness is grateful for the thoughtful gesture and for the feelings which it evoked, hoping for an always more fruitful activity in the service of young generations and the spread of genuine human and Christian values,”

Isn't that like a form letter when the Pope receives "gifts"?

Regardless of it being a ‘generic message’.... he was blessing them for furthering family/Christian values. That right there is a red flag since they were writing homosexual propaganda.

It sounds like a generic form letter response to me.

And it isn’t from the pope, it’s from his staff.

Excuse me, how is the book consistent with Christian values as the note states?
What did I miss?
