The legacy of Stevie Ray Vaughan is not in his guitar playing. Its in his heart.
The blues was not born with the Texan guitarist, but it was given a second life. Twenty-five years after his death at age 35 in a freak helicopter crash, many still find the blues synonymous with Vaughans name. Many also mistakenly think it died with him in that helicopter on Aug. 27, 1990.
Somehow during the quarter-century since Vaughans tragic passing, blues has become a bit of a dirty word. Make no mistake, there are still blues players among us: Jack White, Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, and Gary Clark Jr. are all modern-day bluesmen. The difference is
they wont call themselves that. They bury their blues underneath a lo-fi wink and nod.

SRV’s version of “The Sky is Crying” is one of my all time favorite songs, in any classification.
Sweet dreams of the blues now until morning...
As many of us did...
My friend, Al Copley, was a very accomplished pianist. He was schooled in the classics but his love was Blues and jazz. As for me, I was not a schooled musician. I was a self taught Hammond B-3 player. My hero was Jimmy Smith who I met when I was 14 at the Newport Jazz festival. I copied his style which was good for both the blues and jazz.
Franny was a real good drummer. A lefty, which to me always looked cool! Franny was one of many players in the southern Rhode Island area that became part of the “blues” phenomenon... including Duke Robillard, Greg Piccolo, Rich Lataille, Johnny Nicolas(ended up in the Austin scene), Al Copley, Ed Parnigoni, Sugar Ray Norcia and the list goes on.
I remember the day he died. Fortunately, I attended six or seven concerts of his. His shows stand out from the hundreds that I’ve seen.
but has all the soul of a school of neon tetra..
hee-hee! love that!
Not a Bowie fan, but I bought the album/cd just to listen to Stevie.
Whenever there is a thread on great guitar players somebody who can’t tell tbe difference between apples and oranges comes along.
Good pic of my bfam. I met him at Charlie Whurz’s shop once.
If you would, add me to the list. Thank you.
I loved Roomfull, saw them at the Caravan in Ft. Worth several times. Good memories.
Gotta chime in on this thread.
I was lucky enough to see SRV live three times at the Music Hall in Omaha. The first time I was about 10 feet back right in front of his mic. When he came out and blew out Scuttlebuttin and Soul to Soul, I don’t think my jaw came off the floor for 10 minutes. One of the guys I went to that show with (30 years ago, wow) still jokes about that.
He was sweating profusely and looked like hell, mass quantities of blow and Crown Royal will do that, but absolutely smoked that show. One of my best shows ever.
I actually talked to him on the phone on Rockline. That was pretty cool as well.
I saw him about 4 months before he passed with my older brother at the same venue. My brother was also a big fan. When my brother passed (3 years ago last Sunday)we played “The Sky is Cryin’ as the recessional at his funeral. I hope he was smiling down on that one and maybe joking with SRV about the looks on all the old folks faces.
If you’re 50km/h (~30mph) over the limit your licence is immediately suspended for 7 days and the car is impounded. On the 401 that would be at ~90mph.
Added :)
wait, what?
Sorry, wrong thread :o
I never play the same lead twice, ever. Never have. Neither did Stevie. Satriani and Bonamassa and Via and the Joe dude always did. BB King never did, nor did Albert or Freddie(God Rest His Soul). Shit the Maiden boy Adrienne never played the same thing twice never. No pre programmed shit. Angus Young never played the same lead twice.
Me neither, it amplifies my mistakes.
