Here's a historical fact that Donald Trump, and many voters attracted to him, may not know: The last American president who was a trade protectionist was Republican Herbert Hoover.
Does Trump aspire to be a 21st century Hoover with a modernized platform of the 1930 Smoot-Hawley tariff that helped send the U.S. and world economy into a decade-long depression and a collapse of the banking system?

I do not want a government bureaucrat telling me what I can buy and sell, period. They simply will never know how to run a business better than the businessmen.
I’m fine if he wants to push for a fairer trade deal by threatening tariffs, but keeping tariffs in place that will prevent us buying from and selling to whoever we want in the world should not be the end goal.
Not to pick a fight with a fellow FReeper, particularly one FRom my second home state — I was born in Virginia to two wonderful Gerogia-born-and-bred parents! And I have spent many, many happy days in Georgia over the years. I am on the BoD of my family farm near Tennille, GA, so I have very strong Georgia ties.
But, HST, a former boss used to say to us that “Can’t never could.”
So, we must persevere and FORCE the government to do our bidding re: FairTax, term limits, voter ID, and sundry other issues on our conservative plate.
Clearly, LIEberalism is a failure, and we must continue the battle.
For, if we abandon the field of battle, the LIEberals win and we lose!
WE MUST PREVAIL! AMERICA IS DEPENDING ON US!

HST, if we must trade, we MUST ensure that USA is playing on a level playing field!
We have been playing “Giveaway” since WW II! That MUST stop!
FairTax solves a lot of problems, trade being one of them, so it cannot be “put aside.”
FairTax MUST be part of the conversation!

They can’t ship into the US if it is prohibited or taxed at 40 percent.

I agree. That’s why placing a tariff on bananas from Chile makes no sense.
