Prosecutors: Boys taken from US custody, put to work at farm

MARION, Ohio (AP) — The thousand-mile journey to the Texas border was supposed to bring the Guatemalan teenagers to a better life. Instead, it was the beginning of a terrible ordeal: prosecutors say they were fraudulently plucked from U.S. custody by conspirators posing as friends or family who forced them to work as virtual slaves.

As the country's immigration system was being overwhelmed by an unprecedented flow of unaccompanied children fleeing unrest in Central America, prosecutors said one of their countrymen orchestrated the scheme to force them to work on egg farms in Ohio.

U.S. immigration policy dictates that unaccompanied minors trying to escape dangerous situations can't be turned away. Once the teens were in federal custody, false paperwork was submitted to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Refugee Resettlement, according to the indictment issued in July. Then the conspirators took custody, promising to provide shelter and get them to court dates that would determine their immigration status.

Instead, paid drivers known as "coyotes" whisked the boys to Ohio, where they essentially went underground, forced to work long hours, live in dilapidated trailers and hand over most of their earnings to pay for their passage to the U.S.

Trump is right. Illegals are commiting crimes.

This is not good.

However, if we took all illegal immigrants and put them in a federal work camp until they could be deported, paying them minimum wage but subtracting room, board, medical and legal costs, I’d have no problem with it.

Think of the civic improvement, with 10 million “hard workers” picking up paper on road gangs.

And I think we’d have fewer illegal immigrants coming across the border for a while.

Good to see the Federal Government aiding and abetting slavery.

Really, it’s right up their alley. What they do best.

I have always thought that the elite were importing outsiders to make so much pressure on things that slavery would be a normative way of survival. The upside of slavery is that you are fed and sheltered.

Let all the slaves fight for a pittance.

Exactly. I have been saying for years that much of illegal immigration is modern day slavery. Not sure why there are not more stories about the usually under 12 years of age female children smuggled in for the sex trade. It happens more than anyone wants to know.

This is why we need to change the terms of the debate regarding open borders. Move it out of the terms of ‘illegal immigration’ and start really discussing it for what it is, Human Trafficking and even really rub this up against the UN (omg, am I really going to say this) policy regarding Human Trafficking.

As long as we maintain an ‘open borders’ policy, people will be exploited in their efforts to immigrate here.

How many die trying to get here?
How many are robbed of everything they own?
How many girls and women are raped during their journey?
How many starve?
Prostitutes(children prostitutes), farm help as indentured slaves, drug mules, etc.
How many?

I know many here on FR bristle at the idea of ‘defending’ the illegal immigrant, but speaking of it in the terms of human exploitation changes the whole discussion regarding any changes to our immigration policy.

First true border enforcement of current regulation must happen.
Second a campaign to get the word out that going with a coyote to America is the equivalent of being sold into slavery.
And finally third, looking to create a policy that works for those wanting to come here AND BECOME CITIZENS.

Our President’s current policy on immigration is a crime against humanity.

I have tried, no one is interested. I have talked to many Border Patrol that are heartbroken at what they see, but they are under orders not to discuss and usually there are darn few prosecutions. It is just easier to send them back, of course they return.

I have been trying to get the message out for years that people who really care about the illegals should not support illegal immigration, thinking they don’t know the reality of what they support. At this point I think they know and just don’t care.

It is far easier to get people fired up like Trump has, many are just fed up with the whole process and the lack of any solution from our politicians. At this point even I say just build a wall and deport them all.
