If you're like me, you don't recognize the name of John Gillespie Magee, Jr. But when I got the suggestion from Ms.Behavin for this thread (thank you Ms.B!) I knew I should go check it out and see. John Magee is the young man who wrote the very famous poem "High Flight." |
"High Flight" was composed by Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee Jr., an American serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was born in Shanghai, China, in 1922, the son of missionary parents, Rev. and Mrs. John Gillespie Magee; his father was an American and his mother was originally a British citizen.
He came to the United States in 1939 and earned a scholarship to Yale, but in September 1940 he enlisted in the RCAF and graduated as a pilot. He was sent to England for combat duty in July 1941.
In August or September 1941, Pilot Officer Magee composed "High Flight" and sent a copy to his parents. Several months later, on Dec. 11, 1941, his Spitfire collided with another plane over England, and Magee, only 19 years of age, crashed to his death.
His remains are buried in the churchyard cemetery at Scopwick, Lincolnshire. |
High Flight official poem of the RCAF and RAF
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there, I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air. Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or even eagle flew - And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand and touched the face of God. -~-
Thank you, sir, for your service and sacrifice!

Coming Alongside August 24, 2015
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, . . . who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4
When my sister Carole was diagnosed with breast cancer, our family worried. That diagnosis, with its surgeries and treatments, caused us to fear for her well-being, which drove our family to prayer on her behalf. Over the ensuing months, Caroles updates were honest about the challenges. But we all celebrated when the report came back that the surgery and treatments had been successful. Carole was on the road to recovery!
Then, less than a year later, my sister Linda faced the same battle. Immediately, Carole came alongside Linda, helping her understand what to expect and how to prepare for what she would face. Caroles experience had equipped her to walk with Linda through her own trial.
This is what Paul calls for in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, where we read, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
Thankfully, the Lord doesnt waste anything. Our struggles not only give us an opportunity to experience His comfort, but they also open the door for us to share that comfort with others in their struggles.
Today, how can I be an encouragement to others whose hearts are weighed down by the cares of life?
Gods presence brings us comfort; our presence brings others comfort.
This passage demonstrates how our personal pain can help others who suffer. Paul uses the word comfort both vertically and horizontally. God extends comfort to us. We experience His comfort. Then we can offer comfort to others. In this way, our pain can become a conduit of care for those in distress and lead to gratitude in the midst of pain. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort (v. 3). Dennis Fisher

We did not win WWII without paying a price.
I recently saw a program about “Midway”. I pretty much knew the story of the battle but at the end they gave out a statistic which surprised me.
Of around 500 U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine airmen who fought at Midway, over 300 lost their lives.

Good evening, Publius...glad you enjoyed the story.
While Magee wrote poetry in prep school (even winning a prize), the BBC speculated in 2007 that High Flights inspiration was due in part to hypoxia (oxygen deprivation) experienced by the author in his Spitfire. (Magee had written in his logbook about experiencing the symptoms of hypoxia while flying above 10,000 feet.)
High Flight is the official poem of the Royal Canadian Air Force. A copy was carried by astronaut Michael Collins on his Gemini 10 flight, and it was quoted by President Ronald Reagan in his speech to the nation after the Challenger space shuttle disaster in 1986.

Beyond that, the absolute heroism of the TBD and Midway based TBF (torpedo bomber crews) is beyond description. The odds were stacked 100% against them flying obsolescent planes with no fighter cover. Yet, they pursued the mission with nearly 75% casualty rates total. They knew they were going to die.
The most famous of these attacks involved torpedo 8 which had one survivor out of an entire squadron, ensign George Gay.
Their sacrifice and perserverence allowed the following dive bombers to change the course of the naval war in the pacific in just three minutes.
