Beyond that, the absolute heroism of the TBD and Midway based TBF (torpedo bomber crews) is beyond description. The odds were stacked 100% against them flying obsolescent planes with no fighter cover. Yet, they pursued the mission with nearly 75% casualty rates total. They knew they were going to die.

The most famous of these attacks involved torpedo 8 which had one survivor out of an entire squadron, ensign George Gay.

Their sacrifice and perserverence allowed the following dive bombers to change the course of the naval war in the pacific in just three minutes.
