Palmyra, one of the Middle Easts most spectacular archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage site, sits near the modern Syrian city of the same name. Activists said the militants used explosives to blow up the Baalshamin Temple on its grounds, the blast so powerful it also damaged some of the Roman columns around it.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Sunday night that the temple was blown up a month ago. Turkey-based activist Osama al-Khatib, who is originally from Palmyra, said the temple was blown up Sunday. Both said the extremists used a large amount of explosives to destroy it.
Both activists relied on information for those still in Palmyra and the discrepancy in their accounts could not be immediately reconciled, though such contradictory information is common in Syrias long civil war.
The fate of the nearby Temple of Bel, dedicated to the Semitic god Bel, was not immediately known. Islamic State group supporters on social media also did not immediately mention the temples destruction.
The Sunni extremists, who have imposed a violent interpretation of Islamic law across their self-declared caliphate in territory they control in Syria and Iraq, claim ancient relics promote idolatry and say they are destroying them as part of their purge of paganism. However, they are also believed to sell off looted antiquities, bringing in significant sums of cash.
Al-Khatib said the Baalshamin Temple is about 500 meters (550 yards) from the Palmyras famous amphitheater where the group killed more than 20 Syrian soldiers after they captured the historic town in May.
The temple dates to the first century and is dedicated to the Phoenician god of storms and fertilizing rains.

The Democrats would like to destroy all of the Confederate monuments, including Stone Mountain. Same mentality as the Muzzies.
Before its destruction in 2015, the temple of Baalshamin was considered Palmyra's "most significant surviving temple other than that of Bel".
There’s a lot of that going around here, likes crosses at cemetery’s, etc.
We should be propping up Assad, not trying to overthrow him. That would create stability, therefore the Illuminati are against it. Destabilization is their desired outcome.
Right you are........
Time to evaporate Mecca.
I’m embarrassed that I feel horror for this loss considering the human loss that preceded it. Damn.
I can’t even read this. I am so disheartened at the stupidity of these idiot jihadis I can hardly breathe when I hear of these things happening.
Thanks! Will read it now.
in reality, it seems the drop derives from the fact that all the aggressive, competent fighters are no longer fighting in Dagestan but are in Syria as part of ISIS.
Slip the watchful eye of the FSB? “Slip” sh*t. They more than likely sent them there.
“trouble has been conveniently steered away from Russia and into the Middle East, leaving many analysts to wonder at how even well-known clerics under 24-hour surveillance managed to slip the watchful eye of the FSB.”
It might be more sinister info about the Boston Marathon bombing: http://nasha-canada.livejournal.com/1685716.html That would explain why FBI did not get any further info about the bombers.
Funny, there is an option on that site you linked for English (on upper right), yet when you click on it, nothing happens.
Do you think that pic is photoshopped?
Who is the guy in the photo with Putin?
