Why Donald Trump Won’t Fold: Polls and People Speak
New York Times ^ | August 22, 2015 | MICHAEL BARBARO, NATE COHN and JEREMY W. PETERS

Posted on 08/22/2015 1:50:50 PM PDT by NYer

In the command centers of Republican presidential campaigns, aides have drawn comfort from the belief that Donald J. Trump’s dominance in the polls is a political summer fling, like Herman Cain in 2011 — an unsustainable boomlet dependent on megawatt celebrity, narrow appeal and unreliable surveys of Americans with a spotty record of actually voting in primaries.

A growing body of evidence suggests that may be wishful thinking.

A review of public polling, extensive interviews with a host of his supporters in two states and a new private survey that tracks voting records all point to the conclusion that Mr. Trump has built a broad, demographically and ideologically diverse coalition, constructed around personality, not substance, that bridges demographic and political divides. In doing so, he has effectively insulated himself from the consequences of startling statements that might instantly doom rival candidates.

In poll after poll of Republicans, Mr. Trump leads among women, despite having used terms like “fat pigs” and “disgusting animals” to denigrate some of them. He leads among evangelical Christians, despite saying he had never had a reason to ask God for forgiveness. He leads among moderates and college-educated voters, despite a populist and anti-immigrant message thought to resonate most with conservatives and less-affluent voters. He leads among the most frequent, likely voters, even though his appeal is greatest among those with little history of voting.

Besides political incorrectness, Trump’s willingness to go toe to toe with the media types gains him fervent supporters.

No kidding. It seems like he's given other conservatives the backbone to go after the Left-wing media. It's way past time.

>>> .... but he (Cruz) wanted to give Obama fast track authority to negotiate even more job killing so-called free trade agreements. <<<

I think that's the reason of Cruz’ open rebellion against McConnell, calling him a liar.

I don't know exactly what McConnell promised the whole Republican senators then renegaded. So Cruz can be strong-armed but only he openly showed McConnell of who he really is, no other Repub senator said anything.

The VERY SAD thing is in politics today they ARE ALL bought and paid for!!!! I think WE ALL believe the only way to break up this government CARTEL is to have a few years to put the DAMN LOBBYISTS out of business!!! We can then and ONLY then start to put our country back on track again!!! The border and education system have to be dealt with FIRST and foremost!!!!

I always feel very sad for the generation that did not experience Reagan as our leader, they will NEVER know how ALL Americans LOVED to be Americans!! You are old enough however to have seen how America reacted when Reagan passed, the streets EVERYWHERE were lined with people just to see the hearst go by he was soooooo loved truly a great leader!!!! I was also blessed to have him as our governor for 2 years although very young during that time!!! America felt VERY safe and secure with him at the helm!!! The man was as STRONG as they come yet VERY humble at the same time!!!!

I’m glad you mentioned the education system, which I’ll even tie the media in to as purveyors of information, allegedly.

That to me may actually be if not the biggest problem in the country, it’s near the top of the list. Maybe I’m in the minority here and I probably am, but I put that ABOVE the border.

Yeah, we need to protect and secure our borders. We need to limit and actually at some point eliminate ILLEGAL immigration. And we sure don’t want them voting because we know how they would and I’m sure do vote.

But it’s been the socialist and the secular propagandizing by the schools and by the media, and by the entertainment industry that’s hurt this country the most, imo. That’s the thing that’s killing brain cells, brainwashing people, indoctrinating young people to think what the Obama’s and the Bernie Sanders’s and the Hillary Clinton’s of the world stand for is what’s right for this country. That’s why I think people saying illegal immigration and the border is the biggest problem in this country, that’s why TO ME that is a bit overstated.

We could hypothetically round up and boot out every illegal tomorrow(hypothetically). But then you still have tens of millions of people who have been thoroughly programmed to believe the things I talked about. And you still have their programmers ready to start on the next generation. It’s a big problem.

I agree with you 100% on the education issue!!! The journalists come from our propagandized educational system!!! They are getting at our kids now the minute they hit kindergarten !!!!!
