MUSIC FOR WATER WALLERIN’

This is one of the few poems of F. X. Schlechta that Schubert set to music. Imagine a bunch of fishermen sitting around on the dock – no women allowed! – while they sing about the sea.

This is a historic recording of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau accompanied by Benjamin Britten, a composer who was one of the best Schubert accompanists of his era.

The weather has had a cool down during the day hours, porch sitting is possible - only if I can get my legs to work.
Spent last Saturday in the Emergency room. Had a Doppler looking for blood clots, found none. They had no answers for me.

Evenings are very chilly and damp not nice at all. Temps drop down to the 50s.
I don’t know how you do it Kathy, working full time, taking care of your Mom- no wonder you fall asleep at the computer. Big hugs to you.

MUSIC FOR WATER WALLERIN’

This is from the “Swan Song” collection, put together by a publisher after Schubert’s death at age 31 and consisting of settings of Rellstab and Heine poems. Heinrich Heine was new to German poetry, and it would be Schumann who would later mine his work for songs.

This is a Rellstab setting about a brook, and the four bar introduction may be the best four bars that Schubert ever wrote. The first time I heard it, I thought the top of my head was going to come off. That G# comes when you least expect it, and Anton Nel, a pianist who teaches at UT Austin and appears frequently in Seattle, said that the fingering is very tricky.
