Sen. Marco Rubio cast aside Donald Trumps recent immigration plan during an appearance at the Iowa State Fair Tuesday and challenged whether it would pass Congress.
I havent read his plan; from what Ive seen from press reports, there are a couple of ideas he shares with a lot of people, the Florida senator told reporters after a speech at the fair about the plan Trump released Sunday.
But [the rest] doesn't sound like something that has any chance to pass Congress.
Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, has been more moderate than most of his GOP presidential rivals and was a sponsor of the 2013 immigration reform bill that included a pathway to citizenship. Trumps immigration policy paper slammed that compromise bill which he called the Schumer-Rubio immigration bill as a giveaway to the corporate patrons who run both parties.
The real estate magnate, who is soaring in the GOP polls, also proposed to end birthright citizenship for children born of parents in America illegally.
Rubios comments followed a rain-soaked speech at the fair Tuesday where the senator spoke for just eight minutes and didnt take questions from the crowd because of the weather.
Im going to cut it a little shorter than normal because they say another band is coming through and I dont want anyone to get wet, he said.
But probably too late for that.
While he spoke for less than half of his 20-minute allotment and left to meet voters instead of taking questions in the pouring rain, a substantial throng of attendees with ponchos and umbrellas assembled to listen to his speech.
His modified stump speech cast a forward-looking view at the country, promising that the next century could be better than the past one. He touted ideas to modernize Americas economy and higher education, as well as shore up national defense.
What we are called upon to do not is ensure that the American dream doesnt just survive, but it reaches more people and changes more lives than ever before, he said.
We are called not to just keep America special and great, but keep it greater than its ever been.
Rubios appearance at the Des Moines Registers presidential soapbox marked his first appearance in the Hawkeye State since the states voters declared him the winner of the Aug. 6 Fox News GOP debate, according to a recent Suffolk University poll.
While that poll found him in third place with 10 percent of Iowans, a CNN poll of Iowans just a few days later found him tied for seventh with 5 percent.
The Associated Press notes that he hadnt been in Iowa for a full month before his most recent return, leading some Republicans to question why he hasnt visited more often.
After he left the stage to meet with fairgoers, Rubio bumped into Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R). While the governor remained shy on any official endorsement, he said that he could see himself supporting Rubio.
Hes a good friend, he came to my birthday party. Im trying to be a good host for everyone who comes, he said.
Im really impressed, I think hes a rising star in the Republican ranks and we are really appreciative of him coming.
14th Amend. Just needs to be interperted by Constitutional justices. It was never meant for this.
Correction: Kasich says Trump’s plan is inhumane. Confirmed RINO. (Not that we didn’t know that already.)
So let’s not do that, but, if someone gets like 60% of the popular vote and they want to do there’s no way Congress says no. Of course, it would be just like these Bozo’s to fight someone on our side tooth and nail after powder puffing O’s rear end these 7 years.
OK. Let’s say he is right and nothing Trump says on immigration ever happens. Hypothetical.
The more important point to me is this issue crystalizes how Trump thinks and responds on such “sacred rail” issues. I think Trump’s mindset on this immigration issue might be very well be extensible to other issues.
No. He can’t run for two offices simultaneously. No Rand Paul shenanigans either.
All you have to do is take the 1.5 billion dollars already allocated in 2006 to build the wall, and tell illegals
that if they leave before the wall goes up they won’t be arrested and forced to leave, they can just load up their cars and get in a traffic jam to the south San Diego border
back to Mexico.
They will self deport. Feds could cull the welfare rolls and SS rolls and find the cheats and send them a warning instead of a check.
Watch them wetbacks scurry back to Mexico.
Ted Cruz and Diamond Donald are the only ones running that are not own by Chamber of Whores, the low wages express.
When Rubio, and Paul exit the race Ted pics up Hispanic and the Paul Libertarians support and goes up in the polls.
Congress hasn’t been used since Obama was elected. Prez Trump can sign his own executive orders - the new American way.
Caliph Baraq made the term “lame duck” completely obsolete, that’s for certain.
Maybe I missed something in Trump’s immigration plan but I don’t think it requires congressional action. It just requires executive enforcement of existing laws and adherence to the constitution.
Bye Bye
Unfortunately Rubio, you sided with The Schmuckster on this issue, therefore, you have little credibility. Sorry buddy.
Most of Trump’s plan requires no action by Congress. It’s just a matter of enforcing existing law.
Something we haven’t had in 2 administrations.
Your right...and also, the Executive Office is like a business....who better to run the Executive Office better than Trump????
“Rubio: Trump immigration plan has no chance in Congress”
Guess we need to get a new Congress.
Just as YOU, "Marco the Rube", have NO chance whatsoever in the presidential race.
“Rubio needs to get on board “
Yeah, get him a one way ticket to Cuba.
