After their first presidential debates, it is time for Republicans to get serious. Donald Trump wont be their nominee. Neither will Ben Carson. Nor will any of the men in the 5 p.m. undercard event last week. Despite Carly Fiorinas strong performance, it is hard to believe that the GOP would turn to someone who was fired as Hewlett-Packard s CEO in 2005 after a tenure charitably described as controversial, and whose only run for elective office resulted in a landslide loss in 2010 to Sen. Barbara Boxer in California.
There are only five candidates with a plausible path to the Republican nomination: two sitting senators ( Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz), two sitting governors ( Scott Walker and John Kasich), and a former governor ( Jeb Bush). They represent a choice among very different persons, but alsoand more fundamentallybetween competing strategies for the future of the Republican Party.
First, the candidates as individuals. Ted Cruz is running as the tea partys Mr. Conservativeaggressively antigovernment except for national defense, with an explicit appeal to Christian social conservatives. John Kasich is this generations compassionate conservative, who cites his faith as justification for expanding Medicaid and extending unconditional love to gays and lesbians. Scott Walker is the fighting conservative who fires supporters hopes that he will stick it to the liberals in Washington, as he did to public-sector unions in Wisconsin....

Whistling past the graveyard, are we??
Cruz is not a Texan, no matter how much bacon he cooks on a gun.
I’m still voting for Cruz in March. But if the GOP/RNC provide the amnesty candidate that they have been paid for by the Cheap Labor Express then I will be voting third party for whoever else is on my ballot in November.
Hillary would in fact be the lesser evil.
Who would have a harder time getting amnesty through Congress?
“Once Trump is out, they would laugh and direct all fire at Cruz.”
You’re exactly right and I wish the Cruz supporters would see this. The anointed one is Jeb. The RNC/GOPe, big media, and big $$$ all want Jeb.
That’s why I say the only way Trump/Cruz gets to the WH is to join forces and run Independent. They will all lose to Bush in the end anyway. And Bush will lose to Hillary in the end anyway.
We have nothing to lose and at least a chance to get our country back.
I see this as the reverse of 2012. Then conservatives were split between a bunch of candidates each of whom self destructed in turn. This time that was supposed to be replayed with Jeb, but the dogs won’t eat it. Enter Trump, with unlimited money, name recognition, and the ability to get his message out without even spending it. Now the situation is reversed. It’s Trump way out in front early, and the GOPe desperately looking for someone to stop him. Trump may not get a majority, but he will get a plurality of votes and delegates, just as Romney did. If that happens, how can the GOPe deny him the nomination, especially with the threat to run third party? Not that he could win a third party run, the sore loser laws in key states would prevent that, but he would be a spoiler. The GOPe may have no choice but to nominate him.
So the guy that is leading in the polls, owns a 10 billions dollar empire that employs thousand of people has no chance. Hmmm, Does not Murdock own the WSJ? Think maybe that has something to do with all the anti Trump stuff coming from the WSJ?
Trump has name recognition the Clinton's would kill for and might if he wins the GOP or goes third party .
Trump has been around since the mid 1980 ‘s so he is a known name and well like due to his reality shows .
My kids know him and so does my great aunt .
He would win big.
Being jealous of a young, successful person is such a sad thing.
No he isn't. His parents were legal permanent residents.
Nope
Zero electoral votes.
As planned.
Not as sad as a Canadian/American comparing himself to Jesus on the Senate floor and pretending to be a Texan.
I stand corrected. Thanks.
It's called a Organized Media smear campaign .
Murdoch overseas Sky News said Trump was in deep turmoil on Sat night !
See the Murdoch non hits keep coming .
Link or you’re a liar.
Sure, which part?
"Galston had a melt-down the other day about Trump:History proves that Donald Trump's 'unpresidential' behavior is not a roadblock to the White House
....
Theres a difference between unpopularity and arrogant ignorance, Mr. Glaston says in an interview. John Adams was a statesman and a scholar, and whatever Donald Trump is, hes neither.
...
Donald Trump is not electable, says Galston. Donald Trump represents the intersection of anger and celebrity."
Galston explains that There are a lot of people who are angry and feel repressed by changes on government and society and Trump is saying what a lot of angry older people, mainly of the white and male persuasion, are quietly thinking, but dont dare say. So hes saying it out loud and getting away with it sort of - and it makes them feel good.
Andrew Jackson wasnt a warm and fuzzy guy. He overthrew the establishment and was arguably our first populist president, but he had a lot more in the bank [politically, than Trump], Galston says. But Donald Trump is so far over the line, I dont even know where to begin.
The American people, above all, want a president who cares about them, Galston concludes. And if theres anything manifest about Donald Trump its that he only cares about himself.
Galston worked for Clinton, Gore, Mondale, and long ago independent candidate John Anderson."
Galston is an idiot. Andrew Jackson wasnt arguably our first populist, he WAS the first. Nothing like name-dropping irrelevant historical factoids to make himself appear knowledgeable, and making a mess out of it in the process.
John Adams was a statesman and a scholar ... Typical strawman. Who is asking for another John Adams anyway? Especially since his term was one of the worst ever with massive attacks on our young "free" country.
"The American people, above all, want a president who cares about them, ... Yet the Wall Street Urinal wants someone that only cares about a borderless, internationalist world order. He should have been struck by lightning by even muttering that sentence.
Donald Trump represents the intersection of anger and celebrity." ... The Wall Street Urinal represents the intersection of internationalism, neo-feudalism and slavery. The King's Court, with his buffer of loyal nobility and aristocracy, and the serfs that are supposed to keep their mouthes shut.
Galston is from the "Let them eat Tofu" contingent. And he is terrified of the guillotine that is being wheeled into the public square. He should be.
Your the insider who knows all.
Spare us.
Trump can walk anywhere and be recognized and welcomed .
The other two can not .
Comparing himself to Jesus, of course.
Also all 5 would allow some form of legalize status for most of the illegals here. legalize status = pathway to citizenship, they will claim not it does not but it does. Either the courts will call of it (citizenship) or the Rats will legislate it (citizenship). Only Tromp sends them back to their home country.
Ted Cruz delivered his remarks just after McConnell lined up the votes needed to add a 3-year extension of the controversial export finance bank to a highway funding bill.
I told my staff that the Majority Leader looked me in the eye, and 54 Republicans in the eye [when he told them there was no deal to revive Ex-Im], Cruz said. I cannot believe he would tell a flat out lie.
Cruzs remarks were peppered with Biblical references. In the beginning of his rant, Cruz compared McConnells lie to Peters repeated denial of Christ.
Like Saint Peter, he denied it three times, Ted Cruz said.
So if Saint Peter = Mitch, who is Ted in his analogy?
