The precise moment when Ludovic Villedieu finished his final surf class is etched onto his memory. It was July 23, 2012, and the surfing instructor had taken a group of children out to Trois Bassins, on the west coast of the island of Reunion. At 3.45pm the class returned to the shore, tired and happy.
Forty five minutes later, Alexandre was killed, said Mr Villedieu. Right where we were.
The hairs on his arms stand on end as he tells the story he smiles sheepishly at his own evident horror of recalling that day.
... While the world has been gripped by the discovery on Reunion of wreckage from MH370, the island itself is in the grip of what it terms la crise requin the shark crisis. It is the most dangeorous place in the world for shark attacks. And it is a situation which has pitted surfers against the government, beach goers against conservationists, and tourist officials against scientists as the debate on what to do grows ever-more stormy.
The French territory, 140 miles from Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, has had 20 attacks and seven fatalities since 2011, when la crise began. It means that in the past five years, 13 per cent of all the worlds fatal shark attacks have taken place around this tiny, 40-mile-long isle.

Dunno what makes one beach more dangerous than another. We’ve got our share of Great Whites in the Santa Cruz area yet with all of the guys in the water the last shark attack was in 2008.
That’s ‘cuz hippies stink!
Surfers are the only clean people in Santa Cruz.
” Weve got our share of Great Whites in the Santa Cruz area yet with all of the guys in the water the last shark attack was in 2008.”
I guess you missed the one in 2014 where they had to close the beach due to a shark attack.

Reunion has had twenty shark attacks (seven fatal) in about half the time. That’s what makes one beach more dangerous than another.
Lack of killer whales.
There have be n several fatal attacks down the coast but I cannot recall any (resulting in injury) to in the Santa Cruz area.
It’s almost as if several hundred bodies drifted over to those waters from somewhere.
But, but, but the poor sharkies are endangered and threatened with extinction all over the world by the evil humans. I know that because presstitutes have told me so.
Shark lives matter!
The island needs a bigger boat.
Geez, ain’t they heard about chum? Must not be any fishermen there.
The locals are probably terrified of the island tipping
I’m not even going near a swimming pool! Tonight the SyFy network showed a bunch of movies, Sharktopus, Sharkopus vs Whalewolf, and all 3 Sharknado movies!
