The Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting in Durango to discuss mine waste contamination of the Animas River Friday afternoon.
The EPA said its workers triggered the release of a million gallons of waste while using heavy machinery to investigate pollutants at the Gold King Mine north of Silverton, Colorado.
The agency plans to answer questions and share information about the waste at the board room of the County Administration Building at 1101 E. 2nd Avenue in Durango. The meeting is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
KOB's crew reported seeing the sludge cross the state line into New Mexico around 9:50 a.m. Officials expect it to hit Farmington Friday evening.
The EPA says it will complete chemistry testing within 24 to 48 hours, although that deadline keeps extending. Officials think the waste is just filled with iron and zinc.
"We are demanding from the U.S. EPA an immediate release of detailed information on the type of contaminants that is flowing into the river from the Gold King Mine," President Begaye said in a statement Friday. "This is an all too familiar story on the lax oversight responsibility of the U.S. government."
Emergency management in Farmington has closed off any access points in the river that could get into the drinking water. The Animas River will stay closed off for the next few days as the waste passes through. Crews plan to put more water into the river to dilute it Friday morning.
A call center has been set up for the public at (970)-385-8700.
Wasn't the EDA created by Richard M. Nixon?
NM ping
EPA Bastards
Augustas Gloop! Nooooo!
The BooBocracy strikes again.
They need to swear an oath to not do any damage like doctors do.. Call it a hypocritic Oath or such..
Stupid swine..
Heads need to roll.
So can we sue EPA into oblivion and force their shut down? No, I didn’t think so...
So will they charge their own officials for this travesty?
A lot of programs like this sound great at their inception.
Then reality hits.
I don’t seen any mention of the EPA being sorry this took place.
clean up should come out of their damn budget
Better than when they blew up the dam on the upper Hudson River at the General Electric transformer plant. All the PCB’s were safely burried under millions of tons of muck and silt. Instead they blasted the dam and dumped millions of tons of PCB laden sediment downstream, ruining the ecosystem. I still think you can’t eat the fish. That was in the early 70’s I think. Right after Nixon left.
They usually only destroy the economy and the livelihoods of the middle class.
EPA, here is your fine, you are shut down and out of business.
"I'm here from the government to help you"
The harmed communities must do to EPA as they would do to any corporation that did this, including takedown of its leaders, and nothing less.
Wonder what they were smoking?
kakistocracy, n. See U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
First they send US Forest workers to start fires in our forests, then prevent local fire departments from putting it out, burning hundreds of thousand of acres instead of just 30 or 40.
Now this
I heard Obama said: “”Orangie, you’re doing a heck of a job,”
The clean up should be paid for by money saved in the total closure of the EPA. After the cost of clean up the country would save that amount every year in the future.
