Senate support grows for Iran deal
Politico ^ | Aug 5 2015 | BURGESS EVERETT

Posted on 08/05/2015 7:06:57 PM PDT by WilliamIII

President Barack Obama’s Iran deal looks increasingly likely to survive a challenge from congressional Republicans after several swing Democrats said they would back the deal just as the Senate sped toward recess on Wednesday. Minutes after Senate leaders locked in an agreement to begin debating the nuclear deal on Sept. 8, Independent Maine Sen. Angus King came to the floor to announce his support for the agreement. King’s decision will make it hard for GOP opponents to block the lifting of legislative sanctions when the Senate votes no later than Sept. 17. Story Continued Below “This is the most difficult decision I’ve ever had to make,” King said. “But in the end I decided the terms of this agreement are preferable to the alternatives.” In addition to King, Democratic Sens. Bill Nelson of Florida and Tim Kaine of Virginia also voiced support for the deal this week. Their support is invaluable for the White House: The trio of Democratic Caucus members were early backers of the review law that allows Congress to hold an up or down vote on the deal. And their support transforms the whip-counting operation for Republicans hoping to block the deal. While there are technically enough undecided Democrats for the GOP to marshal a veto-proof majority against the deal, many are reliable allies of the administration and are expected to back the agreement. More skeptical senators like Chuck Schumer of New York or Robert Menendez of New Jersey could still end up voting against the Iran deal and bring some colleagues with them, but the battle for votes appears to be a race to 60 instead of 67.

Any congress critter that votes for an agreement that has secret side agreements attached, is a fool, a disgrace, and incompetent to serve.

The agreement should be condemned just because of those secret side agreements.

you do have to wonder why the GOP agreed to a review process that allowed Obama to win by a veto. Maybe the Republican opposition to the Iran deal is more talk than reality.

I am really having a hard time getting excited about all the drama surrounding this latest “theater” coming from our elected charlatans. I have no doubt this will go down to the wire, but Boehner, and McConnell will find enough traitors in both parties to vote for this treaty, and against the safety of America, and its allies. The Republicans will pass this and prevent a veto because they are afraid to make Obama look weak(er). In the end, Republican leadership is more frightened of challenging Obama (which, obviously, is only because they are racists), than they are concerned about protecting America. But I am certain, they have all their phone banks working, gathering campaign donations to help them “fight” against this travesty.

How about the Corker bill wait was co-authored by Lindsey Graham which made it harder to veto the deal with Iran? What were they thinking?

To me it looks like they really don’t oppose the deal, but they want to look like they oppose it, to keep the base happy. There’s no other way to explain the GOP agreeing to a review process that requires them to get 2/3 vote to kill the deal. The process allows the entire GOP to vote no - without actually killing the deal.

“But in the end I decided the terms of this agreement are preferable to the alternatives.”

In other words, it was more important to this doofus that Obama have some kind of "legacy" than that the Middle East remain nuclear-war-free.

Got it.

If they really opposed the deal they could simply declare it a treaty and handle under the senate treaty provision despite Corker’s retarded bill.

They are a co-equal branch of government, they call call it whatever they want, whenever they want, and screw anyone who doesn’t like it.

What’s Obama going to do, take the Senate to court?

So yeah, they definitely don’t oppose it, and the bill gives them cover to vote no but will allow to be enacted.

These are all rats.

Stopping Obama at every opportunity was a lie by Republicans elected into office for change.
They join him every chance they get.
We will eventually get the needed change.
Any wonder why Trump is doing so well?

Y'know, I would say "Hold up now, this is a story in Politico, let's wait for some information from a bit more credible source before we reach any conclusions", but then the very high probability is that I'd probably be wrong.

This is B!tch, Corker, Graham and their lackeys, you know.

(And yes, technically, Graham's lackeys would be lackeys to the lackey, but let's not split hairs tonite.)
