The renewed national scrutiny of the Confederate flag has officials again considering changing the name of Utah’s Negro Bill Canyon, though the title that some find offensive is a point of historical pride for others.

Grand County Councilwoman Mary McGann said the name of the picturesque canyon in southern Utah is outdated at best.

“We should evolve,” she said Wednesday.

Around where I live, there was a creek that used to be known up through the 1960s as “Nigger Creek”. It was called that because if you followed it downstream, it led you to Nigger Cemetery.

I’ve been to the area several times. The name has already been changed once. I hope Utah doesn’t fold.

Negro Bill Canyon (called Nigger Bill Canyon from the late 19th century until the 1960s) is a canyon in southeast Utah. It is part of the Colorado River watershed. Its stream flows directly into the main channel of the Colorado River within Moab Canyon.

From this link:

Moab’s canyon is not the only American landmark with a similar name. As of 2012, there were more than 700 places in the U.S. with “negro” in the name, according to an analysis of government records.

Just WOW. I am convinced that the NAACP has appointed a committee to look into all the names of every park, street, urinal, etc. to see if it can find something "offensive" and stir up some trouble. What, they have to prove they are earning their dues money? First, they could start with their own name. Then, they can do the world a favor and just shut the heck up. We have Iran, we have unemployment, we have illegal immigrants, we are being taxed to death, and these morons can't think of anything better to do with their time than stir up trouble over things that aren't causing trouble. How many blacks have been tossing and turning in their sleep because this canyon has "negro" in its name? And then, when the cowardly state legislature caves in to this, will the black rhino, Black Forest, black widow, etc. have to change their names?

Not all blacks in favour of the name change:

http://www.timesargus.com/article/20150731/NEWS04/707319925

But Jeanetta Williams, president of the Salt Lake City chapter of the NAACP, says the name isn’t offensive. She’s drumming up support to keep the name that makes it clear the canyon is named for a black historical figure.

“We don’t want to lose the history,” she said. She’d like to see the council tackle other issues facing black residents instead, like housing discrimination. Though her group supported changing the name from a more derogatory word decades ago, they’ve opposed other efforts over the years to make a wholesale revision.
