THE CHAMBER MUSIC OF LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
New Love, New Life, Op. 75/2Mozart invented the German lied song in English when he set a poem by Goethe to music. Composers such as Loewe, Zelter and Reichardt followed, but they are forgotten today because of Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Wolf, who turned the lied into an art form. Beethoven wrote quite a few lieder, and some of them are quite good, although he never had Schuberts gift for combining the German poetic tradition with the Italian melodic tradition.
Finding videos of lieder with English subtitles is difficult, which is why Ive never done a Schubert series. But Ive found a few, which I will share.
This is Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau with Gerald Moore on piano, and it looks to have been taped in the Seventies.

I taught today, and am leaving town for a brief vacay tomorrow. I will, of course, stay in touch with my family for any new developments.

For about 20 years, the only copy of Wayne King's "Dream a Little Dream of Me" was a battered 78 rpm disc. Even though it was the #1 song for a while during the spring of 1931, I was unable to find a better copy. Then Youtube came along, and now there are several versions available on that site, including recordings by
Ozzie Nelson,
Teddy Raph,
The Travelers (aka the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra), and one by
Ben Alley, the only one I have ever heard which features a verse.

And of course...mama Cass!

Fort Carson Soldiers SSG Benjamin Prange & PVT Keith Williams were killed yesterday in Afghanistan by an IED attack. They were assigned to the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. Prange was from Nebraska and Williams was from California.
