Zimbabwe to U.S.: Extradite dentist over killing of Cecil the lion
CNN ^ | Fri July 31, 2015 | Faith Karimi, Michael Martinez and Laura Smith-Spark

As outrage grows over the killing of Cecil the lion, Zimbabwe has called on the United States to extradite the American dentist who shot the prized big cat.

Zimbabwe has started extradition proceedings and hopes the United States will cooperate, said Oppah Muchinguri, the African nation's environment minister.

Walter Palmer "had a well-orchestrated agenda which would tarnish the image of Zimbabwe and further strain the relationship between Zimbabwe and the USA," Muchinguri said.

Palmer, his professional hunter guide, and the owner of the land where the hunt took place are accused of an illegal hunt under the country's Parks and Wildlife Act, Muchinguri said in a statement on the country's parks and wildlife website.

Specifically, Palmer is accused of financing an illegal hunt, and he and the professional hunter are also accused of illegally using a crossbow "to conceal the illegal hunt" so they wouldn't alert rangers on patrol, she said.

This should be pretty straightforward.
Do we even have an extradition treaty wit Zimbabwe and if so what types of crimes does it cover?

If we do have an extradition treaty with them that includes prohibitions on poaching wildlife (which I seriously doubt) then the dentist guy should have looked that up and become familiar with the laws between the two countries before going over there.

I suspect Mugabe is just grandstanding.

He has money. He needs to carefully evaluate which nation would be the safest from Zim extradition and then go there. Ronnie Biggs lived large in Brazil for a very long time.

US Fish and Wildlife investigating? What for? What about the Bald Eagles killed by wind turbines?

This is getting mob-rule-scary.

Extradition is more specific. To say...hey...we got a poacher, from what I’m reading in the treaty, doesn’t mean extradition is in order.

Yep I believe Universities study him, also a pal of Fidel Castro YET he would go hunting with Hollywood Pal Gary Cooper. They were both political polar opposite yet they were friends for both were Hunter enthusiasts.

I need to apologize to everyone and anyone who I fought with at FR over this subject. I was totally wrong in reaming this guy out. I’m sick of Cecil and scared to death that this man’s life is in danger from mob rule and that our frightening president is thinking about trying to extradite him. I believe in public confession of wrongdoing!

“Zimbabwe was plenty good enough for the dentist when he was picking hunting spots.

I’m sure it’s just as good now.”

What the hell is that supposed to mean?

If he committed a crime, extradite him, because:  I understand the principle you are trying to support here.  In some instances I could certainly agree with you.  For this case, I can't.

Zimbabwe was fine for his purposes when he wanted to hunt there. So it’s good enough now.

This principle isn't flawed, but as applied to this case, I don't think it's reasoned or supportable.

And secondly, but most importantly, when people come to our country and commit crimes, then flee, we complain. Rightfully.

Sure.  If someone comes here and commits a felony or a serious misdemeanor, I would certainly entertain this argument.  If someone came here and shot a protected wolf, not so much.  I don't want to dismiss it, because if they did that and were caught on our soil, then they should stand before a court on the matter.  If they have already returned to their home nation, I wouldn't support an attempt to extradite them.

We either want the same rules for all, or we need to shut up about all the illegals.

What this guy did is not injurious to Zimbabwe or Zimbabweans long term.  If he stayed in country and continued to kill wild animals, then I'm all for him being brought up on applicable charges.  Illegal immigrants don't really compare to him because they are in the U. S. illegally on a long term basis.  They are taking massive amounts of money from our government agencies.  They are causing harm to citizens by doing this.  They are also killing, raping, beating, robbing... and of course a lot more.  They are also displacing U.S. Citizens in the jobs market.  This guy was there legally.  He left before his VISA expired.

I'm not even convinced at this moment he was violating Zimbabwe's laws. If so, I stand corrected.

Illegals/immigration is in my top three issues. We need to either be consistent, or we need to pack it in.

Illegal immigration is my number one issue.  I would feel the same if it was 25th..

We aren't even consistent with our laws on the books when it concerns illegal immigrants.

Not supporting the extradition of this man, does not make us inconsistent when it comes to illegal immigrants.

Can you ever remember is asking to extradite an illegal immigrant to face charges here related to simple illegal immigration and no extenuating circumstances?

“I do believe in hunting for food. I do think people should respect the animal and use as much of it’s meat and hide as they can. What they can’t use, they should alert others to, so they can use it.”

It might surprise you to know that it’s a law in Africa that the meat not consumed by the hunting party while hunting is given to local tribes. It’s also the law in every state here in the US that the meat of game animals are to be consumed. I guess you wouldn’t like my office since there are several trophies on the wall and might I add they were damn tasty. Hunting is not a sport or a game it’s an instinct that all mankind possess along with every other predator on this earth.

Yes, Hollywood reprobates are upset about a tick infested lion but not the babies chopped and sold by PP. The sad part is that people will still support Hollywood by purchasing the crap they are peddling that they call entertainment. Why? Because Americans love entertainment, ease, and comfort.

I agree with your comments here. At the same time I recognize some extenuating circumstances.

People work to support themselves and their families. Most eek out an existence. They don't have time to dedicate their lives to a cause. They aren't Leftists who don't work for a living, with a considerable amount of time on their hands to dedicate to causes.

Not all Leftists are like that, but the ones we see on the street in large numbers are. They are on the government dole or being paid by a Leftist support person or group in some manner.

So the average schmo goes out to diner and to a movie to turn the mind off for a few hours. He/she may not have been our of town for months or years.

Should they spend time to get movies cleaned up? I think there's a case to be made for it. I do understand why they still go to movies and don't join a cause at that period in their lives.

“Yes, all this concern over an animal’s supposed rights. What’s their record on human rights?”

There was no concern for the other 50 lions taken in Zimbabwe in 2014 or the 260 taken in Africa in 2014. Interestingly enough there’s been a total of 62 lion’s tagged for study, 34 or dead and 24 of them were taken by hunter’s. So far I’ve seen no evidence a crime has been commited by either the hunter or the guide service.

Nice post, now I kinda want to go to Africa and kill a lion, maybe a leopard and an elephant too just for good measure, and then have one helluva barbeque, sounds like fun.

Seriously, not being sarcastic. I just need figure out how to pull down the coin a dentist makes.

I wonder if this guy gave the meet to a local tribe.

I was not aware of the African or U. S. laws regarding a demand the meet be consumed.

When I stated that I would turn and walk out, I realized that not everyone was “evil” (or something) to have a room like that. It would just make me feel uncomfortable. I’m not sure that’s either good or bad. It’s just me.

I wouldn’t feel right about having a trophy on my wall heralding the kill of an animal. I wouldn’t feel comfortable in a room like that. Again, I’m not making a value judgment here on myself or the person who has a room like this. I just wouldn’t care for it.

It doesn’t bother me that you enjoyed eating part of your kill.

Yes, I agree that it probably is in our makeup to hunt and kill animals. I don’t have a problem with that conceptually.

Look, I’m nor even comfortable with how our food industry treats animals in some instances, so I’m not claiming to be more righteous than others on the subject of the animals we eat.

http://www.centerformedicalprogress.org/cmp/investigative-footage/

Our country is in a tizzy about killing a lion, and could care less about the 55 million babies aborted and the videos of the selling of body parts from aborted babies AND possibly born alive infants.

People refuse to repent of their real sins, so they substitute an easy politically correct sin that doesn’t cost them anything personally. This makes them feel better about the darkness in their soul.

May this country repent now.
