A convicted kidnapper who kept 26 children and a school bus driver in a buried trailer has been granted his freedom - after the governor of California didn't object to parole.
James Schoenfeld, 63, kidnapped the bus carrying the group then buried them alive in a chilling heist inspired by the film Dirty Harry.
Schoenfeld confessed to carrying out the 1976 crime with his brother Richard and his friend Fred Woods.
He was originally given a life sentence, which was commuted to allow the possibility of parole. This will now be granted to him after almost 40 years in prison.
Governor Jeremy Brown could have denied the recommendation of Schoenfeld's parole board, but took no action.

So I’m guessing he was allowed to vote Democrat at some point and maintained an ‘acceptable’ record of loyalty.
If that had been one of my little ones, I would NEVER have let him out!!!!!
They planned this ......it was hideously planned.....and that bus driver deserved undying thanks from the parents.....
he kept all those little kids calm and he figured out a way to get them out.
But those children....now adults....will carry this all their lives.
I remember reading about this crime in Reader’s Digest shortly after it happened.
Chilling.
IMO, anyone who would do such a thing should not be drawing breath, much less out on the streets.
I remember when this first happened.
Uhmmmm....wow and shouldn’t happen
Governor Jeremy Brown
Word on the street has it that Barack Millhuse Obummer...aka Obie from Nairobi...is recommending NoBell prizes for the Governor and the Perp
Me too. I was a kid. It was awful. People that do things like this used to be executed.
I suspect those kids and their parents better not find out where he goes, because his freedom (and life) won’t last much longer.
So now he will be on the street ——a threat to the community!
Why???
Same here. I was in high school in California. It was all over the news.
Exactly or bury him alive. I thought of dirty Harry when I first read this story.
Yeah, I know, who is that?
California. It figures.
Governor Moonbeam.
Should have received 26 life terms served consecutively. Imagine the horror of those children and how it affected them the rest of their lives.
Did any kids survive?
