I was driving in to work earlier this week, listening to a local talk show, when I did something I almost never do. I called in.
The subject was the decision by the governing board of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to allow openly gay adults to serve as den leaders, scoutmasters, and camp counselors. How could I resist? I am an Eagle Scout, and I have a book coming out next week called Scarlet Letters that deals with this larger subject.
When the producer screened me about my stance, I decided to hold off on more complex issues like freedom of assembly and the historical scout requisite to be morally straight and focus instead on the pragmatic.
I told him that as an Eagle Scout, I can attest to the cross-generational intimacy of the scouting experience. Young boys, older teens, and men share a lot of private time. They swim together, shower together, sleep in the same tents together. On the everyday level, I told him, I would worry about the Jerry Sandusky factor.
The producer flipped. Are you saying that all gays are pedophiles? he shot back angrily. No, I said, but would you let your twelve-year-old daughter sleep in a tent with an eighteen-year-old boy?
He didnt get my drift, so I had to explain it. For a man to find an adolescent sexually attractive is not pedophilia. It is human nature. Pedophilia means an attraction to pre-pubescent children, eleven or younger. To join the BSA, a boy must be at least eleven. The Scouts have always encouraged older adolescents to assume intermediate leadership positions. So it would not be unusual for an eighteen-year-old to share a tent with twelve- and thirteen-year-olds.

Logic does not work on liberals. It is the defining characteristic.
Totally fair question. Might be better asked should an adolescent spend that private, intimate time with an adult who finds him or her sexually attractive?
THANX, Good verbage to use at the next school board meeting when they want me to approve 9 kids in a van for an FFA overnighter with mr _________ an unmarried teacher as chaperone
Why should an 18 year old be sharing a tent with a 13 year old, isn’t that a bit weird anyway? Just because someone hasn’t come out as gay doesn’t mean they aren’t attracted to younger boys.
Mr. Fag teaches at your school too?
It used to be that the older boys were expected to mentor and look after the younger ones. To be like an older brother.
Now days with friendship love and familial love being scrubbed and only sexual love being allowed we get your kind of response.
Taking care of the young ones is "weird" and must mean that you are gay.
It is very sad.
While Cashill earned his Eagle at some point back in the mists of time, the Scouts are not what he remembers. Boys can join at age 10-1/2 if they are graduating from Webelos. Eighteen-year-olds are ADULTS and may not be in a tent with any younger teen nor may they shower together. All this is well-established in the protection policies that have been in place going back to at least the 1980s when I got involved as a parent and leader. I absolutely disagree with the recent choices made by the National Council. They squandered their best resource, the Dale ruling, and chose the path of least resistance.
The reason logic does not work is their collection of freakish positions is a mutual multi-sided trade. The gay pedophiles get to sleep with our 12 y/o sons, and in return the age of consent is lowered and the straight pedophiles get access to our underage daughters. The ones who aren't pedophiles support this and in return get access to sheep, or to drugs, or to whatever sick desires matter to them. The world is divided between good and evil, and the democrat party bet (perhaps correctly) that evil outnumbers decent people.
It would take three generations of brain washing (The brain DOES need to be cleansed of filth) to get back to the 1950's
That being said I don't know how the new policy on gay scout masters is supposed to fit in with the overtly Christian moral codes in scouting.
OK, let's re-phrase it slightly.
Would you let your 12 year old daughter sleep in a tent with a 16 or 17 year old boy?
It's fine that kids as young as 10.5 get in. It does not change the fact that you will have adolescent Scouts hanging out with older gay boys who may find themselves sexually attracted to them.
Based on your comments, I’m guessing the BSA now assumes that the protections in place must be so good that the last protection, NOT allowing homosexual scout leaders, is no longer a necessity. That might be a false assumption, but they have done it now, and the world has to react. On it’s face it appears to be the stupidest move the organization could have taken under the circumstances. Just what part of the under two percent of the population are they trying to appease, and why?
Sadly, ya can’t put the genie back in the bottle. We’re living in Sodom.
No one WANTS to admit that but, yup ... yer right

I am a former Life Scout.
I want nothing to do with the program now. Someone really needs to present a new organization, with the principles the old one (had).
The destruction has now been complete. Frankly, some people on our side of the article, seem to even have been responsible.
Scouts can’t share tents with adults. 18 is an adult
The people advocating gay scout leaders would never consider letting their sons sleep in a tent with a Catholic Priest.
> that evil outnumbers decent people.
Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. Matthew 7:13 NIV
Being a boy scout was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I learned the Lord’s Prayer there and was taught the true meaning of “keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.” I think that’s gone now because liberals ruin everything they touch.
We will start seeing many cases of scout leaders (and senior staff) being caught as predators, and many young lives damaged. These predators love jobs that bring them into close contact with young boys and girls (11-17). The door is wide open at the “Boy Scouts of AmeriKa.”
