Donald Trump touted a poll that said he'd be an 'unmitigated disaster' against Hillary

Real-estate magnate Donald Trump has vowed for weeks that if he wins the Republican presidential nomination, he would win the Latino vote in the general election.

On Wednesday morning, he touted a poll he said confirmed his predictions.

"Public Policy Polling (PPP) has just come out with a major poll putting me #1 with Hispanics - leading all Republican candidates," Trump tweeted. "Told you so."

However, the polling company responded on Twitter by noting the survey Trump highlighted also found him widely trailing among Hispanic voters in the general election:

Business Insider reached out to Trump's campaign to confirm that the poll he wrote about on Twitter was the same one PPP referenced in its response. Indeed, a Trump campaign spokeswoman responded with a link to the conservative-leaning Media Research Center's write-up of the PPP survey in question.

"POLL: Trump Leads GOP Field Among Hispanics, Records 34% Favorability," the headline declared.

As the Media Research Center noted, the PPP poll found that 34% of self-identified Hispanic respondents had a favorable opinion of Trump. This was higher number than many of his Republican rivals, including former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R), who was slightly behind with 31%. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Marco Rubio (R-Florida) had 30% and 29% favorable ratings, respectively, among Hispanic voters.

That same polling firm failed to acknowledge Trump’s support in that community was zero four weeks ago, and that it continues to climb despite all the predictions it would crater.

The non-Hillary nominee does not have to win the Latino vote in order to win the election; s/he only has to win a sufficient percentage—anything over 30% would be gravy.

A Republican candidate doesn’t need a high % of Hispanic votes, or of black votes, if the white population turns out to vote.

Yep. It’s the Reagan Democrats that he’d be bringing in.

Limbaugh said today that if Romney had gotten 70% of the Hispanic vote OR just 4% more of the White vote, he would have beat Obama. The GOPe is very transparent. And awfully stubborn.

I’d wager he’ll get a huge percentage of the over-65 vote. Trump’s attitude and unrestricted free speech are what we were brought up with. And we’ve been screwed by the political class.

Gee, how can that blusterous White Billionaire have a higher Rating with Hispanics than the honorary Mexican Jeb?

Well, my Wife is Hispanic, doesn’t give a crap about Politics and she absolutely loves what Trump is saying.

All my Preaching about Cruz never got through to her, and then this. I’m still scratching my Head.

I saw this article. Who thinks Hillary is going to hold onto any support, which is about as thin as 1 mm thick. Clumsy Hillary going to burn through support faster than a ramjet. Trump numbers are only to keep going up.

28% would put him ahead of McCain but below Romney (or do I have that vice versa?) Anyway, right in line with any other GOP candidate, although that same poll had him at 8% among blacks, which is higher than either I think.

When I cast my first vote in 1972 there was no “hispanic vote”.

How did we get to the point where the “hispanic vote” controls who our candidates will be?
