On July 25, 2015, the day after news that a Scott Walker ally had called him a "dumb-dumb,"Donald Trump delighted in dumping on the Wisconsin governor during a campaign speech in Iowa.
"I read this horrible statement from his fundraiser about Trump. I said, Oh, finally,I can attack, "the New York businessman said to laughter in Oskaloosa. "Finally, finally."
Trump--second to Walker among Republican presidential contenders in an Iowa poll earlier in the week--criticized him on several fronts. Then he made a claim about the fortunes of Wisconsins finances.
"Wisconsins doing terribly. First of all, its in turmoil,"Trump said. "The roads are a disaster because they dont have any money to rebuild them. Theyre borrowing money like crazy. They projected a $1 billion surplus and it turns out to be a deficit of $2.2 billion."
Lets focus on that last part.
Is Trump right that a projected $1 billion surplus became a $2.2 billion deficit?
Trump is partly on the money, but hes mixing apples and oranges, and his use of the word deficit is problematic.

In the end,the 2015-17 budget approved by the Legislature and signed by Walker in July 2015 was balanced--just as every other Wisconsin state budget is.
Our rating
Mixing apples and oranges,Trump said that under Walker,Wisconsin "projected a $1 billion (budget) surplus and it turns out to be a deficit of $2.2 billion."
There was in early 2014 a projection of a $1 billion surplus heading into the 2015-17 budget period. Late in 2014, there was a projection of a $2.2 billion shortfall--the difference between expected revenues and the amount of money being requested by state agencies. But the shortfall was never a deficit--and some of the surplus was consciously spent by Republicans,as tax cuts.
For a statement that contains only an element of truth and ignores critical facts that would give a different impression, our rating is Mostly False.

Anyone who would pick Rubio as a running mate is not a "good guy." Walker discredits himself. It is a credit problem.
Not to mention he is surrounding himself with lousy advisers.
In the same interview that Trump said he wouldn’t run 3rd party as long as he was treated fairly, that there were no false ads, and that they wouldn’t lie about him, follows up with outright lies about Walker’s record. Gotta love the hypocrisy.
You forgot that Walker hates black people and drowns kittens for FUN! *SMIRK* :)
Trumps a Trojan Horse for the GOP. He’s a Jack the Ripper candidate.
When your guy is a college dropout who had a 2.6 GPA, and you're calling his Wharton grad opponent a "dumb-dumb," you must have a screw loose somewhere.
EXACTLY. Walker is 100% pro-amnesty. He told GOP donors he was in favor of Jeb's positions, then went and lied to the base. College dropout. Liberal wife (and children) who support gay marriage. NO THANKS.
bump
Trump is treading dangerously here...
I know his supporters can’t accept this, but Trump simply can’t help himself when attacking Republicans.
SSSHHHH...
Don’t tell the people on here. You will be called a troll. Remember, better to bury our heads in the sand then to speak the truth...
ok, so who will Trump appoint as his running mate? any ideas? No? Wonder why...
I’m willing to bet he won’t pick Rubio.
LOL...
Funny, maybe he’ll nominate Hillary once Sanders beats her? I mean, she was at the front pew in his wedding.
Not sure why you are down on Rubio...he is FAR more Conservative than Trump. Not perfect, but more Conservative.
lol the “real” Trump is gaining in every poll which comes out. Can we infer from that the voters like the “real” Trump?
WOW....that was a hard punch! But where is the counter-punch from Walker supporters?
It will be either Cruz or Carson, the only two candidates who refuse to sling mud at Trump. Actually even Santorum refused to sling mud at any candidate, including Trump. My respect for Santorum went up a notch.
You can infer whatever you choose.
He said nice things about Huckabee. He’s run a perfect campaign in my eyes, but I think going after Walker, a truly gutsy and effective leader, was wrong. Lost points on that one.
I am not sure Carson has what it takes...but maybe he does. We will see.
Carson has integrity, common sense, skills of a brain surgeon, family man, believes in hard work and self reliance etc.
