Real estate magnate Donald Trump moved to the top of the 2016 Republican presidential field in a CNN poll released on Sunday, edging out rival Jeb Bush...

Trump was backed by 18% of Republicans in the CNN poll, which was conducted entirely after his July 18 criticism of Republican Senator John McCain's war record. His lead over Bush, a former Florida governor who was at 15%, was within the poll's margin of error. ...

But... but.. Trump’s position on so many issue before entering the presidential race weren’t conservative after all?

Surely not! /s.

At this point in time, the race is about two things: money and messaging.

There are too many people in the race for anyone to start to build the idea of inevitability, which is the key to winning the nomination.

At this point it is about 1) do you have enough money to not only keep going, but to attract more money? and 2) are you developing a cohesive campaign message?

Let’s look at someone like Lindsey Graham, for example. He doesn’t have enough money and his message is “Donald Trump is a cancer in our party”. He’s toast unless he finds some deep pockets and a message that leads to the White House.

Likewise for Perry, Santorum, Huckabee, and Jindal. No money, no post-primary message.

Kasich, Paul and Christie are in trouble even though they have more money and Paul at least has a little bit of a message, but it is getting increasingly muddled.

Those eight are likely toast by the end of the first debate.

Money will keep you in the race longer, and that is where Bush and Fiorina come in. They can build a message over time, but they better have it going by the time Iowa votes.

Carson and Rubio are struggling for cash although they have a message. With a message, they have a core group of followers and that will help them limp along.

That leaves Trump, Walker, and Cruz as those that have a message (all three are running as outsiders wanting to reverse the last eight years) and have a good financial base.

The top ten will be at the debate and that will be Trump, Bush, Walker, Huckabee, Cruz, Paul, Rubio, Carson, Fiorina, and Perry. It will become evident that a couple of them will be out of their league. I would say by mid-August, we will have four or five candidates drop out of the race and the polls will show who is building support and who is treading water. At this point, I don’t see a big implosion by anyone, just a few dying flames from the lack of oxygen (message) and/or fuel (money).

graham’s message is I hate trump and “I don’t like voters calling me so much I will immaturely smash my cell phone so nobody can call me.”

Perhaps more of a plateau than a peak.

The only remark that I would give is that Rick Perry already has a sizable amount in this second quarter and is right up there with Bush, Walker and Cruz even though they have had a first and second quarter report for fundraising.

Only those 4 right now have the $$$ to take this very far for their campaigns.

And you like to make things about the people who post threads, like you have here, and thus engage in personal attacks.

Says the gimp who's made it way too personal in the first place about Donald Trump.

It’s go with Cruz or you will lose (in November, 2016).

So he is at 5 percent and you think he is going to win the general. Wow.....I sometimes wish I had the drugs you are on.

That is an excellent observation. Perhaps he has plateaued. If so, can he get that support back?

Why do you think he would be embarassed at a debate? Trump seems to have answers for everything! He certainly doesn’t lack confidence, plus he has much more experience in debating than most of the others.

And Trump doesn’t, gimp?

I know, I know, all the candidates make it personal, but Trump never does? Waaaaaaaa.

Did Trump attacks Jeb Bush first or did Jeb Bush attack Trump first way before the comments made by McCain about the Trump rally participants that Trump responded to?

Who then was the first to make things personal *(when it comes to candidates running), Bush or Trump?

This is as silly as calling a 7-7 score in the first quarter a “plateau”. Why get all excited about it - just wait and see like everyone else.

Long ways to go yet. Lots of scandals are still hidden in the closets to bring people down. Things will change significantly when some of the others start to drop out.

The pressure on Trump will be enormous. The Media coverage will be beyond anything seen before in a primary debate.

The Media/GOPe will be waiting to pounce on any errors or missteps by either Trump or Cruz.

The Media/GOPe want Jeb and they intend have him at any cost.

Wow, can you give me the Lotto numbers for Weds? Trump is the only exciting thing that has happened to the GOP in 3 decades.

Demolition derby’s are also exciting, but in the end ALL the cars are still heavily banged up, even the one that wins (in this case the GOP nomination).

What would you call it if not a plateau? All candidates reach their plateau to start - it is their base. Trump has achieved his base. He now needs to significantly turn up the heat to build on that. How successful he will be depends on his strategy. If he stays focused on Hillary, I think he will be more successful, but I have no idea what his campaign strategy may be.

Trump then should get too excited about all the polls he is leading in?

Trump is not a politician and doesn’t think like one. He doesn’t fear bad publicity. You need to put Trump in a different category from the rest. If anything, the media will initially build him up since it makes for a much more interesting contest.

It takes more than voters who identify as Republican to win the White House, so look to national polls that are more than just registered voters who identify as Republican.

BTW, Trump has negatives that are at Hillary levels. With that in mind...

... If I am not mistaken, Romney was at 51% negative in national polls but that was after he had secured the nomination and went through the GOP primaries - not before them.
