For the past six weeks, an overarching concern for the Republican Party has been the impact that Donald Trump might have on the GOP primary election – particularly the damage he could do on the debate stage by turning an already unmanageable 10-candidate forum into a full-on circus.
On Sunday, though, Trump himself gave one of the clearest examples yet of why his candidacy is doomed to fail, and why, if handled properly, the debate stage could be his Waterloo.
Trump has staked much of his campaign on his promise to solve what many of his supporters see as a major immigration crisis. As anyone serious about the issue of illegal immigration recognizes, there are at least 11 million undocumented workers in the U.S. right now, and rounding them up for deportation is not a viable option.
Tapper asked Trump to expand on his policy beyond building a wall on the border. The host may have been hoping for a considered reply revealing Trump’s detailed thinking on immigration.
Trump called in to CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday morning to speak with host Jake Tapper.
Much of the appearance was, in fact, more of a Trumpian soliloquy, which appears to be his favorite form of expression, than an interview. However, when Tapper was eventually able to interrupt him and press for some policy specifics, the cracks in Trump’s façade quickly became evident.

Says who?
Shut off the job market, shut off public assistance, and shut the border and over a decade or so the problem resolves itself.
Step one is to secure the border. Step two is to enforce the law. Repeat.
Trump's position is a bit incoherent, but not that hard to understand. Secure the border so the problem doesn't get any bigger. Expel the felons. Then we'll see what can be done about the rest. But you can't do anything if you don't first secure the border.
Writing Trump’s political obituary is so LAST WEEK. The country has moved away from that and now accepts that he’s not going anywhere.
It is far better for the left to try to keep driving a wedge in between Trump and his supporters - and maybe, although it’s a long shot (as he is very smart), just maybe, if they push hard enough, Trump just may step in it - but that certainly didn’t happen here, not even close.
The two pronged approach makes sense both logically and logistically. Deport the ones who are not an asset to the U.S., and then evaluate the rest, while securing the border.
This in no way resembles any other candidate’s stated views.
No candidate has to have “policy specifics” at this point LOL!

What is important is learning the predisposition of the candidate on an issue. Secondly, there is the need to ascertain whether the candidate is expressing the predisposition just to film-flam the voter.
The difference is there is, as we know, a dramatic difference between "increasing the chances" someone will get caught, and building a triple fence from El Paso to San Diego.
So far, no one has been willing to actually do that.
I guess you can keep trying, but until ANOTHER CANDIDATE takes “deport them all” position, Trump still wins this issue.
Can you even name another candidate that is calling for a fence? I can’t, but I admit I haven’t looked very hard.

First, I believe Tapper indicated that Trump is not serious presumably about immigration.
Second. I would bet my left arm that Tapper has NEVER, EVER, not even ONCE, participated in a root cause analysis. OTOH, I likely could not count the number of RCA’s Trump has been a part of.
Yeah, “Dreams Of My Father” was full of policy explanation, err, hopenchange.
If it’s eleven million today that means only two million have come over in 15 years while the nine million in the 2000 corrected census came over in the decade after the Reagan amnesty.
Nine million in ten years, vs two million in 15 years.
Anyone buying that?’
Remember when Bush talked up amnesty in 1999 and 2000? After he did, we had a massive run on the border. Time magazine pegged it at three point five million PER YEAR in the early 2000s.
Even if only 1 million came over per year since 2000, that would mean very close to twenty-five million today.
IMO, it’s been closer to one point five to two million per year.
I think we have between thirty and forty million here right now. Honestly, it could be even higher. I don’t think it is, but I may be wrong on that.
Not Time, This writer, or anyone else really knows how many we have here. That’s why self-repatriation is desirable.
We need to make them want to go home.
Further, we need to put some teeth in it.
I would give them 24 months to settle their affairs here and exit the nation. Well your property, pack up, and leave.
If you don’t, when we catch you we will confiscate everything.

All candidates agree on fencing where fencing is possible and works. There already are many places with fencing.
I listened to Trump at the border in Laredo, TX. He basically said the the same thing.
Rounding up eleven million = not a viable option.
....I don’t know, have they tried rounding up the eleven million?
I’m amazed that a government that can tax me based on the number of miles I drive can’t find the people in the country illegally.
I think it has more to do with not wanting to find said people and less to do with ability to find those people.

I am concerned about his safety moving forward. The Clintons took out Kennedy Jr. to become Senator.
Ok, I guess they’re paying lip service to the issue. And why not, they need votes from us. Perhaps they can elevate the issue a bit too.
I would also like to see more candidates do what Trump did a week ago and meet with the victims of Open Borders, but I believe they are not permitted to, due to their financing agreements with the RNC and other Republican donors.
A real shame.
Trumps books was light reading, however, I think this guy is overselling the demise of Trump. Shutting the flow of illegal immigrants down is a really big deal, and more than we will get on our current GOPe trajectory.
His stance on the Louisiana shooter is dead on, indeed locking up homicidal loons is a thing we should be doing, but that is going to require rebalancing the individual right to be a raving loon who doesn’t take their medication with societies right to be able to limit the number of criminals known to be insane who are allowed to be in a position to commit crimes they will not be held responsible for.

For sure. I suspect he’ll have to get court order to have Secret Service protection provided as just about every political player wants him out.
Did I miss something the writer saw? I watched Trump be pestered by a liberal assclown over and over again, and yet did not deviate from his message. Seems to be a job well done. Romney and McCain always wanted the media to LIKE them, and would stupidly break down after such a line of “questioning.” But not Trump. I guess if you are a journalist, this is some kind of FAIL. But Trump, like Reagan, is not talking to them, he is talking to the American people.
