For the past six weeks, an overarching concern for the Republican Party has been the impact that Donald Trump might have on the GOP primary election particularly the damage he could do on the debate stage by turning an already unmanageable 10-candidate forum into a full-on circus.
On Sunday, though, Trump himself gave one of the clearest examples yet of why his candidacy is doomed to fail, and why, if handled properly, the debate stage could be his Waterloo.
Trump has staked much of his campaign on his promise to solve what many of his supporters see as a major immigration crisis. As anyone serious about the issue of illegal immigration recognizes, there are at least 11 million undocumented workers in the U.S. right now, and rounding them up for deportation is not a viable option.
Tapper asked Trump to expand on his policy beyond building a wall on the border. The host may have been hoping for a considered reply revealing Trumps detailed thinking on immigration.
Trump called in to CNNs State of the Union on Sunday morning to speak with host Jake Tapper.
Much of the appearance was, in fact, more of a Trumpian soliloquy, which appears to be his favorite form of expression, than an interview. However, when Tapper was eventually able to interrupt him and press for some policy specifics, the cracks in Trumps façade quickly became evident.

Always that 11 million figure, when we all know better.
No candidate has to have “policy specifics” at this point LOL!
You could ‘catch’ any of them with that.
Trump needs to get out in front of this and tell the world he was wrong about Romney is ‘12. Romney had it right about employer enforcement and self deportation. Donald needs to do this while he can.
What *IS* the real figure now, anyway?
Because all the candidates have written books stating their how to strategies.
I heard one fifth of Mexico’s population(150M) lives in the USA.
Graver likes Bush and Sanders, won’t waste my time reading him.
Exactly!
As a matter of fact, I don't think ANYONE has ever axed President Jarrett about her "policy specifics"...
Republicans with “policy specifics” are “wonky” and unelectable. Trump has no policy specifics and is called out for delivering a “Trumpian soliloquy.”
0bama and Hillary are called “forward thinking” and “nuanced” in the same circumstances.
I see where this is going.
I haven’t heard anything detailed from a politician in maybe a decade. I hope Tapper asks the others the same detailed questions and especially the RATS.
Whatever makes this scribbler think savvy US voters believe the policy promises Republican politicians make to the voters during campaigns? In 2014, all of them promised to repeal Obamacare before the election. After the election, the first thing McConnell and Boehner did was totally fund it for Obama while vilifying the few conservatives who objected. That’s the kind of liars we are used to.
there are at least 11 million undocumented workers in the U.S. right now, and rounding them up for deportation is not a viable option.
WRONG.. simple city ordinance requiring YOU be legal in the U.S. to rent, own, or inhabit any residence..
Upon payment of property seizure for failure to comply.. Jail or both.. possibly a fine as well..
QUICKLY illegals will deport themselves.. no worries..
except for those “connected”.. that problem would next on the DOCKET..
Señor Yeb Bush’s problem is that he’s like McCain - except that conservatives won’t be fooled again by a Palin-like VP choice.
Trump said this about Clinton.
“What she has done is criminal. What she has done is criminal, he repeated. I dont see how she can run. Because if the prosecutors, who are all Democrats by the way thats part of the problem with fairness here, theyre all Democrats so theyre protecting her. But if you had an impartial prosecutor and they were honorable and maybe they are — were gonna find out but what shes done is criminal.
He just rose in the polls again. Thanks Jake. ( by tye way ,you are obnoxious.
Last weekend it was McCain who was going to doom him.
This weeks it’s..........what? lack of specifics? The author wasn’t very clear.
My prediction, this author will be forgotten long before President Trump is.
Donald Trump Endorses Amnesty for Illegal Aliens
Daniel Greenfield, Front Page Magazine - July 26, 2015
Disappointing, but not surprising.
The depressing reality though that is that most of the Republican field has endorsed amnesty in one form or another. So this isn’t much of a surprise. Trump is using his own vocabulary, but he’s echoing the same amnesty talking points you could hear from Marco Rubio... or Barack Obama.
During Friday’s interview, Trump said the U.S. should take a two-step approach to the 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the country.
“Well, the first thing we do is take the bad ones of which there are, unfortunately, quite a few,” said Trump, who owns three New Jersey golf courses and once owned three Atlantic City casinos. “We take the bad ones and get ‘em the hell out. We get ‘em out.”
But he said the country should take a different approach with “the other ones” i.e., undocumented immigrants who have “done a good job” since arriving in the U.S.
“I’m a very big believer in the merit system,” Trump said. “I have to tell you: Some of these people have been here, they’ve done a good job. You know, in some cases, sadly, they’ve been living under the shadows. ... If somebody’s been outstanding, we try and work something out.
“But before we do anything, we have to secure the border because the border is like having no border,” he added.
I’m sure some people will be tempted to cheer this, but compare it to Obama’s own amnesty executive order.
These executive actions crack down on illegal immigration at the border, prioritize deporting felons not families, and require certain undocumented immigrants to pass a criminal background check and pay their fair share of taxes as they register to temporarily stay in the U.S. without fear of deportation.
Cracking Down on Illegal Immigration at the Border: The Presidents actions increase the chances that anyone attempting to cross the border illegally will be caught and sent back. Continuing the surge of resources that effectively reduced the number of unaccompanied children crossing the border illegally this summer, the Presidents actions will also centralize border security command-and-control to continue to crack down on illegal immigration.
Deporting Felons, Not Families: The Presidents actions focus on the deportation of people who threaten national security and public safety. He has directed immigration enforcement to place anyone suspected of terrorism, violent criminals, gang members, and recent border crossers at the top of the deportation priority list.
Deporting the “bad people” first is already an Obama talking point. People may think they can trust Trump, but not Obama or any of the Republicans, but like them, Trump frontloaded rhetoric about enforcement while keeping the amnesty out back.
And “secure the border first” has been the talking point of every Republican amnesty proponent.
Marco Rubio still supports legal status and a slow road to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants, but now says the government must convince Americans the border is secure before taking those steps.
Trump had already indicated support for amnesty earlier, now he’s being clearer about it.
This is in line with what CNNs Chris Moody reported Trump saying during a press conference in Chicago at the end of June. When asked what he would do about the illegal immigrants already residing in the country once the border was secured, Trump replied, give them a path, according to Moody.
When The Daily Caller sought clarification at the time from the Trump campaign, a senior adviser replied with a circuitous answer that emphasized that Trump wanted to secure the border and didnt believe in amnesty, but wouldnt explicitly reject a pathway to legalization.
Nobody likes the A-word, including Rubio and Ryan who spent the better part of a year arguing that legalizing illegal aliens isn’t amnesty if they have to pay a fine. Even Obama made that argument.
The next step would be to get Trump to lay out criteria for who gets to stay and how many of them it would apply to, but good luck getting an answer.
If Trump is destroying the GOP, then why is the Left wringing its hands? Shouldn’t they be cheering him on?
What I’ve been saying is build a fence first and start enforcing the laws. Then we can debate what to do with people already here. But when the patient is in critical condition, first stop the bleeding.
What Trump has done is to change the narrative that if you don’t support open borders and amnesty for all you are outside the mainstream.
