(CNN)In the first national telephone poll since Donald Trump earned rebukes from Republican leaders over his comments about Senator John McCain's military service, the real estate mogul has increased his support among GOP voters and now stands atop the race for the party's nomination.

The new CNN/ORC Poll finds Trump at 18% support among Republicans, with former Florida governor Jeb Bush just behind at 15%, within the poll's margin of error.

They are joined at the top of the pack by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, with 10% support among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents who are registered to vote. Trump's backing has climbed 6 points since a late-June poll, while support for Bush and Walker has not changed significantly.

I think it was McCain who called conservatives crazy.

This guy has to be stopped, he will destroy us, I can’t believe so many conservatives are falling for his shitck.

They aren't falling for it, they are enjoying it. He serves as a stalking horse. He brings the issues that the media has facilitated the hiding of to the forefront.

The media has structured the narrative so that the Dems never face the music. Trump's issue is forcing them to face the music in the reporting of these issues.

Will conservative vote for him instead of Cruz? I wouldn't but who knows -- stay tuned.

But in the mean time, I have no interest seeing the more conservative of the candidates attack him. This is where cruz is smart. Let it play our for a while. I don't want a concentrated effort on our side to end up benefiting Jeb, Huck, Linda and the others.

I’m in that group, too, and I think you’re right. We remember what the US can be like.

Don’t disagree with what you say. I’m just not at the commit stage. Wouldn’t be unless it were him against Jeb only. If he came to be THE candidate on our side, then I guess I’d have to have a ‘come to Jesus’ meeting with myself but ultimately would commit to him over Hillary instead of just not voting.

Trump is a pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, pro-ACA, pro-gun control LIBERAL DEMOCRAT that hangs out with the clintons, and you’re bitching about Walker being a rino?

WTF?!?!

They have about the biggest case of money red-ass one could imagine. They absolutely can’t stand it. They can’t stand it because they can’t refute Trump’s main thrust without using the obfuscating word ‘immigrant’ to hide all the ills these illegals have thrust on us.

We've been watching these phoneys for years...Holding our noses to vote for the losers...There is nothing they can collectively say that will sway any of us who know what they are up to...

Ofcourse the media will join in with the cartel to castigate Trump...It won't work for those of us who know who we are dealing with...

By August 2011, Mitt was already leading most polls.

I just can't get behind Walker. First his liberal wife and children who are so enthusiastically pro-gay. Reminds me of Eric Cantor's liberal wife who wouldn't shut up about it. Can't stomach that crap. And Walker is not reliable on immigration, regardless of that one video last week -- in which he stood for the "rule of law" but also told the illegals he would NOT deport them. Finally, Walker is not handsome, nor symmetrical. This will hurt him with women. And his wife is homely and chubby as well. And no one in America knows who the hell he is. Hillary will crush him.

But Trump? Imagine him and Melania arriving at events in their 757 and stretch limo, to an explosion of camera flashes. We have a celebrity-worshipping culture. Bitter, wrinkled Hillary and fading Bill will melt under the Trump klieg lights.

Trump has been on the wrong side of nearly every issue of importance to conservatives at some point, that’s just a fact.

RIGHT NOW, Trump is on 'my' side of the issues...The Bushes have never been on my side of the issues...The others, only partially...

Trumps says he is pro America...The others are one world globalists who are willing to give up the sovereignty and borders of the United States...Why would any American support anyone besides Trump???

Yes. I’m ashamed to admit I voted for those two fools (McCain and Romney). I consider it one of my most shameful acts of stupidity.

BTW, I just noticed my phrase “money red-ass” was wrong. It should have read “monkey red-ass” because they (medial and Dems) are acting like a bunch of baboons.

Rand Paul just looked into the Foxnews camera and lied straight faced to me.

Answering a question regarding Trump’s immigration “comments”, Rand said

“you do have to have a secure border, but I don’t automatically thing oh my goodness all immigrants are bad people.”

“I’m not going to villify all immigrants with the broad brush”

He did it with such ease. Trust = 0.

Rand Paul is a bad guy.

WRONG. Romney was leading every poll in July/August 2011. And in some, Palin actually drew 12%. See HERE.

Trump is on Trumps side.

Name ANY major issue of importance to conservatives and I can link you a story where Trump was on the wrong side of the issue at one point or another.

Trump is a con man. Please dont fall for it.

He is NOT a Christian, He is NOT a conservative, and he is Dangerous.

We do not need a vindictive, power hungry, Christian in name only, man who will switch sides on any issue on a moments notice and who holds grudges as our president.

Sorry, but I have no interest in supporting a dictator. And mark my words Trump would be a dictator and would eventually turn on us conservatives.
