Firebrand Republican senator and presidential candidate Ted Cruz on Friday rushed across a line rarely crossed on the Senate floor: He called the leader of his party, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a liar.
"What we just saw today was an absolute demonstration that not only what he told every Republican senator, but what he told the press over and over and over again, was a simple lie," Cruz said Friday morning. "We know now that when the majority leader looks us in the eyes and makes an explicit commitment, that he is willing to say things that he knows are false. That has consequences for how this body operates."
Prompting Cruz's outburst: McConnell's move to set up amendment votes on a must-pass transportation bill. After senators voted to consider the bill, McConnell (R-Ky.) set up votes on two controversial measures -- a repeal of the Affordable Care Act, and a reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank of the United States -- and did it in such a way that will make it difficult for other amendments to be considered.
That move incensed Cruz -- who, like many conservatives, strongly opposes the bank's reauthorization, though it enjoys support from a supermajority of his Senate colleagues. While McConnell has personally spoken against Ex-Im reauthorization, Democrats said in June he had agreed to schedule an Ex-Im vote in order to get highly divisive trade legislation passed.
But McConnell at the time denied that any deal had been made, and Cruz said the same assurance was given in a private Republican conference meeting.
"Like Saint Peter, he repeated it three times," Cruz said Friday.

Trump cult of personality in action, folks....now, liberal positions are the smart ones to have. Even on this conservative website.
Welcome to FR, BTW.
This is interesting. Take no prisoners.
You are nothing but a wet blanket. The Democrats and GOPe love responses like yours because it has its roots in fear.
Good for Ted! The truth should always be told...always!
You’re right...it is a must watch...Cruz does it again....calls McConnell a liar, and presents the case clearly.
****Just heard Rush say Cruz will be on his show in the second hour...I think the beginning of the second hour!!!!!****
And when it’s proven that McConnell lied, then Mitch must go..
Would love to be in the turtles office to see his reaction..
For all the good it will do, Norm, etal. have been vindicated.
I would go with clean. I believe what Ted says on its face. Any other politician , I need proof.
I have a feeling that ‘16 will, as far as Republicans are concerned, will make the licking they took in ‘08 seem like child’s play.
Right...and having the demos in the majority and Harry Reid as senate leader would be an improvement.
Well, please say it would be a Cruz/Trump ticket. Trump is too much of a loose cannon to be potus. But he might be just what Cruz could use, viz. national recognition, free publicity, etc. Of course, that sword cuts both ways.
When Israel gets nuked and gay men in snazzy black uniforms start dragging Christians off on one way trips, my conscience is going to be clean. I fought the good fight and tried to get others to join us.
Some people were too smart and knew better. Now we burn.

You go, Ted.
Well, maybe a Cruz ticket with Trumpster leaving the race and supporting him. Trumpster would never take the VP job, never.
And yet we still have posters on this very thread that advocate the “lesser evil”
Amazing.
“I have a feeling that 16 will, as far as Republicans are concerned, will make the licking they took in 08 seem like childs play.”
I would rather have Democrats behaving like Democrats than to have a majority of Republicans behaving like Democrat Lights, Democrat Milds or Rinos.
No, not everyone knew!
I suspect you would be in favor of Trump running as a third party just to show the establishment repubs...and insuring Hillary the presidency...boy, that’ll show ‘em!
I am more furious with the idiot senate repubs, including my dummy senator, Mike Crapo, for passing up the opportunity to get rid of McConnell as leader when they won the majority.
If Jeb Arbusto is the nominee, what's the difference?
