Although Donald Trump is trying to re-invent himself as a conservative for a possible bid for president in 2012, reminders of his prior support for Democrats and big government polices keep adding up. The latest: The Donald supported the auto bailout in 2008.
I think the government should stand behind them 100 percent, Trump told Fox News Neil Cavuto nearly three years ago. You cannot lose the auto companies. Theyre great. They make wonderful products.
Faced with crushing debts caused by poor management and high labor costs, GM and Chrysler requested federal assistance to keep the firms afloat, and were granted a $25 billion loan in the fall of 2008. President George Bush then secured more than $17 billion for the companies.
This occurred months before the birth of the Tea Party, but conservatives were outraged.
Not Trump. A longtime advocate of sweetheart deals between corporation and state, the real-estate developer went all in for the deal.
[Y]ou have to try and save the companies, Trump said in a separate 2008 Fox News interview. And I think you can easily save the companies.
The Club for Growth, a free-market advocacy group that opposed the bailouts, blasted out a statement Wednesday knocking Trump for his support for bailouts over bankruptcy, and cited that the real-estate mogul had succesfully filed for bankruptcy himself four times in the past 20 years.
If theres anyone who should know the value of filing for bankruptcy, its Donald Trump. He should have known that the $13.4 billion government bailout of the auto industry just put off the inevitable while putting taxpayers at risk, said Club for Growth President Chris Chocola. Bailouts and nationalizing whole industries can cripple free markets and has hampered our economic recovery. We need our next President to understand that economic freedom leads to growth and prosperity for all, and that the government should never be in the business of picking winners and losers.
As POTUS Donald will call up those chi-coms and demand that they send our manufacturing plants back here and soon we will get a call from our old boss asking us to come back to work, of course he might be Chinese now.
Jim Long might be Kim Jong now.
I hate those $#@&$# chi-coms, we need Trump to kick their butts.
Trump is the last, best effort to get Hillary into the White House. “Conservatives” are suckers over and over and over. Think Lucy - Charlie - Football.
So, while Ted Cruz remains my number one choice, if Trump can win, and if he is not just jerking us around like with the birth certificate, and if he stays in it to win it, then I have no problem with him being the nominee. We need to watch him very carefully. I still don't know if his motives are sincere, and if his immigration position is genuine. But I am glad he is making this the issue.
Well this is enlightening.
Don is an expert at business bankruptcies having lots of experience so he would be really good at business bailouts as POTUS.
Didn't GM use some of that $$$ to move plants to Medico??
“Save GM, Save Detroit, Go Don.”
Yeah, which is right in line with your statement that he might be a Dem but he's better than Hillary, and you'd support him even if he was pro-abortion and pro-homo marriage.
Bailed-out GM is investing $3.5 billion in Mexico.
When do Americans sneak over the border to get those jobs?
I have, I have indeed noticed.
I have also noticed that none of their non-Trump candidates are saying anything of merit or value whatsoever.
Hardly worth mentioning at this point.
Trump could advocate for seizing homes via eminent domain to pay for socialized medicine for union workers' abortions while yelling "Hail, Satan!" and a bunch of people here would still scream about how "conservative" he is because he has, after decades, started to pay some lip service to immigration issues (although he favors amnesty).
Mexican auto workers make about 4 bucks an hour.
Americans can “make” more than that from the fedgov just by being alive.
This worries me re Cruz, as he’s really the only one I could vote for whole-heartedly. I am hoping that Trump isn’t some kind of spoiler against Cruz, on behalf of the GOPe.
Oh, I agree...
Walker did a good job crushing one union...
The problem is that the higher ups in the Unions are still Marxists.
Never did. You on the other hand support taking billions from American taxpayers to hand it to labor unions.
GM moved 11 plants to China.
Please know that there is a third type of Freeper-those of us who are enjoying the show, but have qualms, and deepening ones, as to what Trump is really in this for (it’s a given that it’s not to advance the conservative agenda). I am beginning to wonder if it’s not all a big GOPe conspiracy to squeeze Cruz out. He was getting some traction before Trump got in. What was the meeting about?
Amen...
Some more reason on a site that has been hijacked by Trump supporters.
Boehner and McConnell are not “conservative” Republicans.
“Try something different” means electing a lefty.... I don’t think that’s going to work
I am wondering the same thing...I actually had the same idea you had.
Apparently, Cruz called the meeting. Also, Donald did give 5K to Cruz BEFORE he jumped into the race.
I am not sure he is trying to squeeze out the RINO’s...I think his target is Cruz. The timing was suspect.
