It was the spring of 1968 and Donald Trump had it good.
He was 21 years old and handsome with a full head of hair. He avoided the Vietnam War draft on his way to earning an Ivy League degree. He was fond of fancy dinners, beautiful women and outrageous clubs. Most important, he had a job in his fathers real estate company and a brain bursting with money-making ideas that would make him a billionaire.
When I graduated from college, I had a net worth of perhaps $200,000, he said in his 1987 autobiography Trump: The Art of the Deal, written with Tony Schwartz. (Thats about $1.4 million in 2015 dollars.) I had my eye on Manhattan.
More than 8,000 miles away, John McCain sat in a tiny, squalid North Vietnamese prison cell. The Navy pilots body was broken from a plane crash, starvation, botched operations and months of torture.

The slime continues to drip
It makes me all the more anxious for Trump (and others like him) to sweep that place clear of the decades of filth from the same politicians who have sleazed up the place
I wonder if she looked into what dope-head Obama was up to at that same time
Frigging hypocritical media now wants to pretend they have some sympathy for McCain? McC will allow himself to be made the martyr of the day by the MSM, won’t he? Sure he will.
What were Michael E. Miller and Fred Barbash doing in the spring of 1968?
In the end ... if a candidate is NOT good enough, the VOTERS will be the judge... not OTHER candidates.
And what the fathers of these two writers were doing ...
This is pretty pathetic. Actually, I remember the Trump of those days. He actually went out with several girls from my college in NYC. He was awkward and the women invariably dropped him. One didn’t think he was very bright. He mentioned this himself in his Vegas speech. And if Maxwell’s Plum and Dangerfield’s were wild clubs, I’ll eat my hat. Next, they’ll be bringing up the Peppermint Lounge!
I can’t believe they’re bringing up the tired old Viet Nam garbage. Why didn’t Obama fight in any of the many Middle Eastern wars we had? He was sitting around smoking weed and having Bill Ayers writing his books while he voted “present” in the state senate. And least The Donald worked for a living.
Or their fathers or grandfathers.... Great minds
Here it comes on schedule. Got to ruin Trump. Like 5 o’clock Charlie.
Trump can't change who he is.
Be fair, now. There’s hardly anyone left alive to talk nor many documents for a lot of that time period.
I was refering to the media
Trump brought it up. Trump introduced Viet Nam into this campaign. It was a 200-giga-electron-volt rookie mistake.
This is the same Washington Post that did not ask this of Bill Clinton.
This is the same Washington Post that was not interested in Obama’s past. They only screamed “conspiracy theorist” to any objective person that was skeptical.
This is the same Washington Post that defended Hillary Clinton over the Benghazi scandal.
So if you find yourself on the same side as the Washington Post, then you need to recheck your conservative credentials.
McKook likes to kick dirt on the other guy’s shoes. Its his M.O. I never believed his war hero story and am sure there is more to it. But, not interested.
Oh, stop. He’s of an age when he could have been drafted. If he didn’t mention John McCain, they still would have brought up Viet Nam. They’ll probably be bringing it up in the 22nd Century against someone. That’s the idiot media.
If McCain hadn’t opened his big yap, Trump probably would never have gone there. It takes two to make a rookie mistake, apparently.
Pretty lopsided article. Not a word about the accounts from other POW’s that were there claiming he caved and made over 30 videos dissing the US. Or the fact that the Vietnamese took it easy on him because his father was an admiral...
Not a word about helping push through legislation making it possible to hide info about prisoners left there. Not a word about McCain doing absolutely nothing to help vets in his years in Congress...
The accounts of Trump’s lifestyle may be accurate, but quite a lot has been left out about McCain...
John McCain is like most of the senate and irrelevant. Most certainly his Crazie’s comment started this little tiff.
McCain lost his hero status when he gave Obama the White House. His time is long past.
1968. Obama was 7. Eating roast dog in Indonesia
