2016 Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump spoke at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa and got a standing ovation from the crowd.

Trump made a number of statements deemed 'controversial' by many of the other GOP candidates, including saying that John McCain was only a war hero 'because he was captured.'

John McCain has done more to ruin this country than almost anyone else I can think of.

Following in the footsteps of unconvicted womanslaughterer Teddy Kennedy.

I watched Trump and think the quote was misinterpreted. But, when he was asked about vowing not to switch
to a 3rd party, he declined, which really bothers me.

This Luntz guy is not a Conservative...One of his first questions to Trump, “Have you ever asked God for forgiveness?”... in my lifetime I have never seen a candidate asked this question before.

I remember recoiling when at a WH press conference someone asked GW Bush "What do you think you've done wrong, and should apologize to the American people for?" or words to that effect. Bush very sincerely told him that he has done the best he knew how, that he loves this country, and history would be the judge.

I'm not saying everything Bush did was best, but I don't think it's possible to have a perfect presidency. The "politics of personal destruction" practiced by our so-called media have indeed destroyed so much. Trump and Ben Carson are somewhat insulated by their unarguable past successes, plus the fact that Carson is a very clean-living person for real, and Donald at least marries the women he's been with.

I am glad Trump addressed the topic of his multiple marriages in this interview, and honored his past wives by taking responsibility for the first two failures by having been more focused on work than on his marriages.

....but calling them Hero's denigrates those fighting ( with their hands tied behind them) today in far away places.

Isn't calling those fighting "Hero's" also inappropriate? Yes, fine men, etc. but not necessarily Hero's, correct? Hero's to me are those few that are part of events that go beyond simply fighting the enemy - for example, putting themselves in harms way to save others when they had other options to keep themselves safe. Simply serving or even being captured does make one a Hero.

I agree with you there.

I don’t think we need to remand perfection either, but I do demand a reasoned grasp of Conservatism. Bush didn’t have that and his brother Jeb might just as well be off in another time dimension. He’s simply lost in space.

Why do I say this about Bush? I say it because he simply wasn’t capable of responding on point from a Conservative vantage point off the cuff. It just wasn’t in his core.

Did Bush love the nation? I believe so. I think he did his best. Heck, Jeb may love it too, but he’s just completely clueless.

You’re right about the gotsha questions they ask Republicans. It is all about taking them down.

Obama gets a pass on everything.

Meant to address your comment on Trumps being frank about his prior two wives, and his contribution to the marriage failures.

Best to get those things out in the open. I think we can all look back on our marriages, those of us who have failed ones, and see where we were in error. It’s good to be honest about it.

Trumps kids seem to respect him. They have working relationships with him, and I think he is very proud of them.

He put them both on his show. He was very complimentary of each on the program. How much of that is reality and how much is faked, I don’t know.

He did say he would go out of his say to have diner with them. If true, that’s interesting.

He had a grasp of social conservatism, but certainly not economic conservatism. Now we need someone who has actually had "the buck stop here" to at least try to dig us out of this mess. Bush never met a spending bill he didn't like; Obama is just obscenely determined to plunder.

Trump declined to state unequivocally that he would not run on a third Party. Wouldn’t a shrewd negotiator be foolish to give up a negotiating position and get nothing in return?

I may be getting my terms a little blurred, but I didn’t find his “No Child Left Behind” program as socially Conservative.

I didn’t find his immigration stance to be socially Conservative.

As for abortion, he did take several moves to cut the ones taking place in the military. Seems there was another such step, but I don’t remember it clearly.

This took place early in his term in office, and from then on he didn’t do much to my knowledge.

So yes, he was socially Conservative in some aspects. In others not so much IMO.

I wonder sometimes if this is another Ross Perot. Perot only ran because he hated bush and we ended up with 8 years of Clinton. And I sorta wonder if that’s not what this is.

Luntz clearly working against Trump.

But he's a rookie, at best.

He rocked the joint.

"He’s not the most conservative guy running but he’s the most earnest along with Cruz."

He's more sincere than even Ted Cruz, and it's immediately, essentially, apparent that he is an America First Nationalist.

Anymore that's about all we can ask for.

Thank you for the link to the to Trumps appearance. I am liking him more each day.

Trump/Cruz sounds pretty good. I like Cruz also but I know that Trump would not take the position of Vice President.

“Who are these people?”

He is a propaganda specialist (”public opinion guru”). They are the PC police gestapo who fret about sensitivities and words being said, rather than the whole truth and the actions that need to be done.

Thanks for your follow up.

If the guy was a next door neighbor or a member at the church, I’ve got no beef with him.

It’s when he wants to lead that it becomes intolerable to me.
