Donald Trump escalated his feud with Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain Saturday in a way that probably wasn’t the most politically astute.
Appearing at the 2015 Family Leadership Summit in Iowa, Trump decided to make the case that McCain is not a war hero. Asked by moderator Frank Luntz why he would call a war hero like McCain a “loser,” Trump replied, “He’s not a war hero.”
“He’s a war hero because he was captured,” Trump said sarcastically. “I like people who weren’t captured, I hate to tell you.”
McCain spent five and a half years in a North Vietnamese prison where he was routinely tortured after his plane was shot down during the Vietnam War.
After hearing boos from the crowd, Trump backed off a bit: “Perhaps he’s a war hero but right now he said some very bad things about a lot of people.”
Trump was referring to McCain calling the people who attended Trump’s recent immigration rally in Arizona “crazies.”
This performance with our friend out in Phoenix is very hurtful to me, McCain recently told the New Yorker magazine, speaking of Trump’s July 11 rally. Because what he did was he fired up the crazies.
The Washington Post reported Friday that Trump is trying to recruit a primary challenger in Arizona to try to defeat McCain in his 2016 re-election bid.
Screw you Trump and your cowardly draft deferments. I would not vote for McCain on a bet but he’s far superior to Trump when it comes to having the courage to fight for his country, Trump’s another Slick Willy as far as military.
By the way, I enlisted and served, didn’t wait to be drafted.
This may be where Trump’s heart is, in the end. Only Trump and God know for sure, however.
Trump should say that when we go to war, we will mean it, and when we sue for peace, we will mean it.
There are swirling stories about how McCain was indulged prior to his capture... it isn’t a one dimensional affair.
“Maybe he’s developed dementia after being beaten while a prisoner.”
I’ve always believed the guy is one French fry short of a Happy Meal. Never seemed to be all there.
Watch the video for yourself.
The left, and the gope want to shut us up. In this case, it was “he’s a war hero”
Every post on this thread is a reason why we lose. Trump said something not very nice?
GOOD!
Our side needs to get a little mean. We've been getting our teeth kicked in for years! We need to man-up and fight back.
Whether Trump's insulting McCain back was a bit more direct than some folk like, the controversy is in the nature of one over Play Ground insults--not serious stuff, not at all in an era where our military are forced by Obama to serve in gun free zones, where foreign haters can use them for target practice.
Think about the total misdirection of ire, in this situation. Cruz & Trump supporters should take up the real military issue, here; and leave the amateurs to babbling about the playground insults.
Bill
There are swirling stories about McCain having been indulged prior to the mission in which he got captured. Is it possible that this led to his being captured, i.e. he wasn’t giving it anywhere near his best due to low expectations? This is not a one dimensional story... Trump might be (awkwardly) correct.
Here’s the quote:
‘Hes a war hero because he was captured, Trump said sarcastically. I like people who werent captured, I hate to tell you.
I think Trump is just great. I do
I have a personal relationship
With the POWs in addition to holding them highest in our hero world in the U.S. AND I think McCain needs to be put in his place, the way Trump was trying to do
But no. This is out
So what? About 18,000 who were drafted came home in boxes, paying the ultimate price.
Sarcasm can be dangerous — it can project implications that the speaker never intended.
This might simply have been a rebuke of McCain riding high on his POW status, but it wielded too broad a brush.
You and I are on the same wavelength. Thanks for telling it like it was.......and “is.”
There’s a pattern to Trumps madness:
1 say something ridiculous at first look
2 Wait till opponent attack and take opposing side
3 clarify what you said
4 back it up with actions confirming your original point
He is at step 3. Expect in one of his next public events to hear from POW or the÷or families who have never before had a public national platform to share their side. Before they have been suppressed by not only McCain power but the gopee
Lol
I love primary season here
Grrrrr
I just listened to the tape which I doubt few here have
Someone maybe jindahl is taunting Trump that he can’t criticize Lord McCain because he’s a war hero which always gives Queeg a pass to shit on conservatives
Trump responds that McCain is hero only cause he got captured which is technically true
It gave him his first celebrity
So then whoever is taunting Trump says he’s still a hero
Trump then says he prefers his heroes not to be captured
Some boo so the Trump says ok ok maybe he is and then meanders off
I just caught this little clip on Wilcow Saturday on XM radio
It’s all I got
Bear in mind it appears the entire field except Cruz is on full attack on Trump cause he’s ahead and they are scared
I’m ambivalent
I detest McCain and plenty folks who were indeed there are none too kind to him for whatever reason I don’t know
Someone held and tortured that long deserves a lot of rope before condemning no question of that
Trump will recover from this no doubt
He’s rolling and won’t be last time he steps on his Johnson
Right
And it’s going to reap many headlines. ‘Conservative’ v ‘conservative’. Pres contender v former pres contender Trump the military champion v ‘military hero’
Wonder if he read about McCain's experiences as a POW ?
You mean you like the Nazis, Donald?
Even if it does that, it will raise both topics to prominence. Better to fight and be noticed perhaps.
“... Trump is right, even though its politically-incorrect to agree with him.”
That’s what I’ve been thinking. What he said was correct. Unfortunately, it’ll be fodder for the MSM to attack him — over and over and over again. So, he’s right; he just shouldn’t have said it, for his own sake.
Well there are plenty of McCain’s failures relative to Vets and I hope Trump shows no mercy. Our Vets have suffered long enough and now our military is dying on US soil because of stupid gun laws. Don’t see McCain doing anything about that either.
