Donald Trump escalated his feud with Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain Saturday in a way that probably wasn’t the most politically astute.
Appearing at the 2015 Family Leadership Summit in Iowa, Trump decided to make the case that McCain is not a war hero. Asked by moderator Frank Luntz why he would call a war hero like McCain a “loser,” Trump replied, “He’s not a war hero.”
“He’s a war hero because he was captured,” Trump said sarcastically. “I like people who weren’t captured, I hate to tell you.”
McCain spent five and a half years in a North Vietnamese prison where he was routinely tortured after his plane was shot down during the Vietnam War.
After hearing boos from the crowd, Trump backed off a bit: “Perhaps he’s a war hero but right now he said some very bad things about a lot of people.”
Trump was referring to McCain calling the people who attended Trump’s recent immigration rally in Arizona “crazies.”
This performance with our friend out in Phoenix is very hurtful to me, McCain recently told the New Yorker magazine, speaking of Trump’s July 11 rally. Because what he did was he fired up the crazies.
The Washington Post reported Friday that Trump is trying to recruit a primary challenger in Arizona to try to defeat McCain in his 2016 re-election bid.
Patton said lead or follow...
But he would never call POWs losers. So he would NOT have said what Trump said
Wow. I disagree with McCain strongly. I can’t stand him and his family. But he served his country honorably. That is the one thing you can say positive about McCain. For a miserable draft dodger like Trump to insult out troops. And by saying this he’s insulting all POWs. Are the Trumpbots going to turn against our soldiers. Trump is miserable scum.
Maybe so. And maybe he will. But he’ll be sorry he insulted POWs along with McCain
McCain is horrible
He served his country. He wasn’t a draft dodger like McCain.
That’s right about Admiral Stockdale but there never a mention by Admiral Stockdale of McCain’s HEROISM. Not one word of any heroic act. NOT ONE WORD.
If you call McCain a hero for suffering, then you must call every American military service member who served in Harm’s Way a hero. To do so diminishes the meaning of ‘hero’.
McCain was a casualty who suffered greatly as so many others did. Being tortured does not equate to being a hero. It equates to being a victim.
McCain was no hero. Trump is right.
Time to take the gloves off! McCsin basically called anyone supporting Trump, crazy! Did he ever say that about Obama’s supporters!? McCain gave us Obama..,, he lost that election and I wonder if it was on purpose! Fight back...
This is Mr. Trump’s response and he makes a great point.

Donald Trump's Own Secret: Vietnam Draft Records
It's not much of a secret, but you can tell from the article just how much they hate him.
Donald is part of what you might call the "glass house generation" and probably shouldn't be throwing stones even at one particular veteran and POW.
Does Trump's scattershot, "what I'm thinking right now" approach really make people confident that he'll be able to focus on the country's problems if he gets elected? Could it be he's going to keep up the flame wars and little feuds even from the White House? Like Obama with Fox News only more so?
We are supposed to walk on eggshells every time McCain is mentioned and quantify our dislikes of his political mind with a positive of his VN service. However, despicable and repugnant people come from every corner of this world. And, one is judged on a lifetime rather than a period of time.
I can’t say with certainty that he was a hero or traitor while imprisoned, but can say with certainty that he’s been a traitor for a long time.since.
As far as Trump and this sticking...that dog won’t hunt as long as he stays focused on just McCain (or moves on to some other hot topic).
Oh really? I must have missed that part. Could you care to point where Donald Trump insulted Admiral Stockdale?
I smell Jebbite supporter sh*t on this thread. Not going to work.
I agree that a POW is not a hero.
the term ‘hero’ is far, far overused
however,
a POW deserves a tremendous amount of our THANKS, who knows what hell he may have been subjected to while in captivity?
we need to be SURE to thank ex-POW’s profusely
therefore, I think Trump made a booboo arguing this semantic point. it just isn’t worth it... and it makes Trump look ungrateful. bad move, Donald
We and Trump, are not talking about what McCain did or didn’t do in prison
Trump said he was capitalizing on being a war hero as if he commanded troops in battle McCain HAS been doing that while doing terrible things to our country as senator
Trump got his point mixed up by not understanding the facts clumping those wonderful POWs in with his valid point about McCain. The POWS have no illusions about themselves. They don’t need Trump telling us that they pretend they’re war heros the way McCain does about himself
I agree. And Trump could have taken him to the woodshed on so many positions McCain has taken over the years. Instead he decides to attack him on his military service and his time as a POW, and does it in a way that insults every POW before or since. When Trump in on stage it seems like his mouth disconnects from his brain. Or maybe he is just by nature a nasty guy who likes to bully people. Either way that act is going to get really tired really fast with most of the people in the country.
Not to Trump apparently. He likes people who were not POWs.
Remember how Trump first said something that got everyone’s attention and then followed it up with individuals speaking publicly about
MC CANE will rue the day that he ever called Trump followers crazies and started this battle. Expect Trump to give the victims a voice on the national stage The POW who served with him the POW families that he quieted. Etc
Not good for Trump.
This is what I have said about Trump swinging out and punching himself in the mouth.
It has been inevitable.
If he is going to go after McCain, do it in regard to his senate record and his losing campaign that brought us a Marxist dictator wanna be.
a) Who says Patton would say that? He did say something to the effect that you don’t win wars by dying for your country, but by making the other poor bastard die for his country. But the point was to have his men focused on killing not thinking about dying. He in no eay put down those killed or captured in action.
b) Patton was a war hero and great general. Trump was a draft dodger with 5 deferments during Vietnam.
I love Trump. I am very pleased about what he’s doing. I am very happy that he’s pushing that horrible Jeb off
Trump made a terrible blunder by not being aware of our POWs. McCain is a dope. Trump put them together
I’ll forgive him. He’s a big dope sometimes. But he’s going to have to get smart on the military if he wants to talk about them AND claim to love tgem
Here ‘s what I would like to know, that is exactly what did Admiral’s Stockdale and Denton think about McCain?????
It is interesting that McCain topped out as a Captain and never was considered for Flag rank considering the family history.
