Paying by the Mile
Willamette Week ^ | July 1, 2015 | ANTHONY MACUK |

Excerpt: ... The agency [ODOT] wants to move away from fuel taxes and instead charge drivers based on the distance they drive.

ODOT officials have been conducting a decade long search for ways to do it—and it’s turned into an unfocused, meandering and expensive effort.

The latest plan: Starting July 1, the state is seeking as many as 5,000 volunteers to pay the state a mileage-based rate rather than taxes at the gas pump.

The pilot program, called OreGo, relies on drivers signing up with one of three companies that will supply plug-in devices to count the miles.

But the plan is already troubled.

ODOT is struggling to find ways to lure drivers of hybrid and other fuel-efficient cars into a program that could penalize them for using less gas. According to OreGo’s own Web-based calculator, cars that get better than 20 miles a gallon would actually pay more under OreGo.

Reminds me of when the government preaches about conserving electricity and water.

When the folks do, then when there is a shortfall of revenue they add a surcharge. Go figure.

I drove down to New Jersey a few weeks ago. I ‘borrowed’ an EZ Pass for the tolls having never before used one I did find it convenient.

While heading north on the NJ Tpke. I stayed in the EZ Pass lane towards the GW Bridge.

There was no toll booth until I actually got to the bridge, but the non EZ Pass vehicles had to stop and pay several miles before the Hudson.

They scanned my Pass and charged the count without my even slowing down.

This is an ominous development.

Yup, maintain the current tax for gas guzzlers, and implement the new tax to get them dastardly green vehicles. I love it!!!

Here in Ohio, the electric company did such a good job convincing ppl to reduce their consumption, which the ppl did, that the electric company had to raise rates to make up for the shortfall in order to continue to pay employees and employee bennies. You just can’t make this insanity up!!

Worry not!
Within four months of such a thing being mandated, some high school sophomore will have developed a plug in that will halve or quarter the actual mileage driven.

I have faith that my fellow Americans will do anything possible to confound government.

So if you already got "Flo" plugged into your OBD connector for the insurance spying, where do you attach the state mileage spy device?

Splitter cable. But more likely, the state will sell your data to the insurance companies. For your own good.

Problem solved, thanks.

I am curious. Elected officials did this? Is it what the people who elected them WANTED, or was it something the “elected” officials just did themselves because they thought it was “best” for everyone?
