'How I found out my partner was gay'
BBC News ^ | 8 July 2015 | Sarah Bell

Posted on 07/08/2015 3:27:58 PM PDT by MinorityRepublican

Many gay men and women end up marrying people of the opposite sex. But what is it like for the spouse who eventually finds their marriage breaking down?

Recently we told the stories of gay men who had married women. It prompted a strong response from readers who had experienced it from the other side - those whose wives and husbands had come out as gay.

"It feels almost homophobic to say anything about them. To me it's not brave to spend 10 or 20 years with someone only to destroy and discard them," says Emma. She found out her husband was gay a year ago.

"They may go on and have a wonderful new life while leaving a crushed wife behind. You just feel like your whole life is wasted and there's no closure."

One of the most difficult things for many spouses is watching their former partner being celebrated as brave for coming out, but knowing the damage they've left behind.

It is an experience to which Carol, 43, can relate. With her former husband now active in gay rights, she received a message calling him an inspiration and a role model.

"I was disgusted by this, that someone actually considered him to be both of these things when he had spent our entire relationship lying to both himself and myself.

"To me, there is nothing to be proud of - he destroyed our family through his failure to admit that he was in fact gay," she explains.

Hey, it’s homophobic to say that some nasty man married a woman for camouflage so that he could succeed in his career and then after 30 years dump her for a wealthy male. How much is this about two guys getting together for two wildly overinflated salaries instead of sticking with the dumpy woman who is raising two kids without a career? Perhaps it’s not about sex and identity but more about the American sin of greed?

Arianna Huffington should have written this one. Of course, that would lead a rational person to doubt anything on HuffPo.

That’s a terrible story. Children are so conformist - to ignore that in a child’s early development is so very cruel. And I was embarrassed because my mom talked too much!

First you’ve got to invent a latin-sounding name for your condition if you want to be taken seriously.

If you just say “I want to bang hot young chicks”, you’re a pervert. However, if you say “I am a juvenapulchrasexual”, it sounds legit.

(I just made that up... juvena = young, pulchra = beautiful)

She was hot, but I think if you had to listen to her talk for hours a day, years on end, it just might turn you gay.

Will I be hailed as a brave man and have shot at starting my advocacy group?

My guess is that it's more likely you'll be shot at rather than getting your shot. ;-)

I know someone who had a husband come out of the closet. He dumped her and the kids and then he and his partner adopted “gaybies”.

He wouldn’t stick around for his own kids but he would buy two kids so he and his partner could play family.

She supported him all the way. Both of them are ministers.

juvenapulchrasexual

It is so good to find someone that can sympathize with my inner person. It's not a condition, it's who I am (I didn't choose this).

For years I've felt shame and the need to hide, to "sneak around" with hot young women. Too many times I was forced to find a "safe place" to be myself in motels that take cash and charge by the hour.

Because there are no wealthy attractive females he could move in with, right?

Or listen to her laugh for fifteen minutes.

I am a 67 y.o. Male, now engaged to a 31 y.o. Filipina. I am not a pervert! It is quite normal here for young women to seek the attention of us “foreigners” for socio-economic reasons. It helps when they are attractive. It helps even more when we are not “pangit” (ugly)! We have been together for a year and a half.
I have a number of friends here, with similar situations. We did not seek the younger ladies, but we do not turn them away! I was introduced by another American guy (retired USAF) who is marrying her sister. Another good friend is retired USArmy, living large with a house, a farm, and a school where they teach English in a Christian setting.
Life is good!

I saw her at the LA Book Fair years ago, when she was promoting her book about cancer.

Not a standout.

a very obnoxious voice!

That may be just her TV voice.

Her real voice might be OK.
