NEW YORK (AP) Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump stood firm Monday on his description of Mexican immigrants as criminals.
The businessman, under fire from critics in and out of his party, issued a lengthy statement refusing to back off comments he made in the speech launching his presidential bid last month. In it, he called Mexican immigrant criminals and rapists, prompting several businesses, including NBC, Univision and Macys, to cut ties with Trump.
In his new statement, Trump said the Mexican government is forcing their most unwanted people into the United States and claimed that in many cases, they are criminals, drug dealers, rapists, etc.
He said later Monday, during a charity golf tournament at one of his courses, that his standing in some polls is proof that many Americans share his views.
I think the polls are a testament, said Trump, one of more than a dozen Republicans running for president. In the old days, they used to use a term, `the silent majority. We have the silent majority back, folks.
Polls this early in the race tend to reflect name recognition more than depth of support for a candidate and few in the GOP regard Trump, a well-known TV figure, as a serious presidential contender despite poll standings that may be good enough to qualify him to be in the first GOP debate. Debate guidelines provide for the top 10 candidates in national polling to participate.
One major brand that has not cut ties with Trump is the New York Yankees. The teams co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner, who organized the charity golf tournament at Trumps new course in the Bronx, said the real estate developer is a loyal friend and I am loyal to my friends.

Should get him some votes—but not mine. yet.
Sorry but that's just BS. Mexico ain't Cuba.
So you think they are sending the best over our border illegally?
The U.S. became a dumping ground at least 25+ years ago.
Absolutely right, Trump. I hope he stays in to the bitter end to tell PC crippled, dumbed down Americans THE TRUTH!
None of our spineless politicians have the guts to.
"They're" not "sending" anybody. Do you know any Mexican immigrants?
yes. the best criminals.
“Do you know any Mexican immigrants?”
LEGAL immigrants, one or two.
Illegals, plenty.
I live in Orange County NY not far from the onion fields.
One of the last times that ICE did their actual job, they did a sweep of the “migrant workers” here.
Out of 300 “migrant workers” on one onion farm, 280 or so were here illegally.
Check out post 7..
To me, Trump has shown me just how WEAK these Republicans have become...they stand for nothing but compromise.
I completely agree with Donald trump. Hooray for a very Brave man.
None of our State or Federal Officials have the Courage to protect hard working American Citizens from the Invasion of Illegal Aliens.
How much does it cost the Taxpayers to Feed ,House, Educate and cover the billions of dollars spent on these people year after Year..Taxpayer Salaries are confiscated to pay for this confiscatory Practice by this government thru the IRS.
So logic tells us that we are indeed getting the worst of the lot.
Right now, I’m happy he’s in the race, saying what he is saying, even if a little less than artful. We need more more truth, more consequences for corruption, and less word art.
Make that “dumping ground” for all of Latin America and much of the 3rd world. There are a few hundred thousand illegal Bangladeshis, Pakistanis here too. It is crazy. They have established communities to melt into. NYC is full of these two groups plus numerous other illegal alien Muslims
And let’s not forget: The San Fran pier shooter was here ILLEGALLY, a multideported criminal, a felon, and yet was here again.
Best and brightest, right?
Since I am impacted daily by ILLEGAL immigrants and drug smugglers, Trump is on top of my list. I cannot for the most part stand the guy, but he is the ONLY candidate that is even talking about the problem. Well, the others are all complaining about Trump talking about the problem. Cruz sorta, kinda said Trump has the right to talk about the problem, but I see nothing that tells me he would change a damn thing. Since we have an open primary here, I will vote in the Republican primary for Trump. If he is still in the race.
Scumbags all.
