Civil Rights Group To Petition Renaming Of Robert E. Lee Elementary In Long Beach

RUBEN VIVES July 6, 2015

A civil rights group plans to deliver a petition to Long Beach school district officials Monday afternoon demanding that an elementary school named after Robert E. Lee, the commander of the Confederate Army, be changed.

"The petition is endorsed by many local civil rights leaders and is signed by dozens of concerned citizens," said Pedro Baez, political director of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable.

The school, along with another in San Diego, are the latest targets of a nationwide movement to remove symbols of the Confederacy from public facilities.

The movement comes in the wake of the fatal mass shooting of nine black men and women worshipping last month at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C.

Isn’t it interesting that when the Right tries to effect change, they have no standing. When the Left tries to effect change, they don’t even have to be in the same hemisphere.

This ....garbage...is going to go way too far.

Bastards.

This shows just why plain old numbers are the best way to go. Like mom’s old Public School No. 71.

We should try to outlaw Che Guevara shirts.

I bet the media would be utterly confused and outraged. "But Che is a cultural symbol to a lot of people!!!!!!!!"

Some years ago, New Orleans deleted the name of George Washington school. They did that because Washington owned slaves. And they didn’t want to hurt the self esteem if the mostly black student body. They named the school after some.obscure African king.

No word on whether student achievement increased now that the students were no longer attending a school named for a slave owner.

Aren’t PS numbers just a New York City thing? I’ve never heard of schools being numbered anywhere else.

In the old days Baltimore definitely did it.

I’m sure most cities did. Don’t know about extraurban schools.

It’s risky and alienating using names on schools. Obviously.

I went to Woodrow Wilson High in Long Beach. Wonder when they’re coming after its name.

Like I said, this PC garbage (not what I’m thinking) has to stop.

They’d love to replace all white “giants” of history with pipsqueek blacks whose biggest claim to fame is being on a school board?

Don't you just love how wacko this country is in 2015!!!

(1) one crazy nut kills a number of blacks in Charleston and the entire society is to blame and all historical icons must be torn down and renamed.

(2) one crazy illegal alien kills a woman in San Francisco after committing multiple felonies and being caught and released by Obumbler's Immigration authorities FIVE times - we are told that we must NOT compare this lone criminal with ALL ILLEGAL ALIENS, or we will be a racist like Trump.

I am convinced the country has fallen down into the Alice's rabbit hole.

We could rename it Wayne B. Williams Elementary School. Give them an icon of color as a role model.

It sounds from the article like that peter Parnett guy was as deeply racist and as motivated to do something about it as Hitler. I do think all the schools named after him should have changed their names long ago.

Historians, was Robert E. Lee all about slavery, or just defending territory being invaded? Not sure why that school should be renamed.

It is time to just say, “No more, no where.” Libs are on an emotionally driven roll.
But, liberalism is totalled emotionally driven in all respects.

Agreed. It is insane. Anyrhing liberal -= good, anything that might be extrapolated under any circumstance to have anything to do with anything conservstive = bad.

I don’t mind an emotional component, because I get there myself. I generally have something to back it up with though.

The Left? Not really...

I agree with your totally emotionally drive comment, because nothing backs up their point of view other than feelings.

And, they are going after Thomas Jefferson named schools too.
Maybe they will take him off the nickel and tear up the Declaration of Independence because he wrote it.

Yes!! Cuz changing a school name will help students achieve a higher educational level. I mean look at the great scholastic success MLB’s name has brought to those fine institutions of learning proudly bearing it. Maybe those rotten Southern Civil war names are the reason for the pure ROT that is urban black culture. So by all means eliminate ALL vestiges of the South’s uprising. Maybe, just maybe it will elevate the disaster that is the black community......or not. It’s all BS. The symbols and names are just being used as excuses for the failures of that same black community. Sure, there is some bias within the ‘system’, but more and more these failures/problems are self-inflected. As a ‘state classified’ brown person, I’ve quit caring about the black, brown, yellow, or rainbow experience. I care about the individual. Race or group identity is now a non-starter with me. Take that back to your ‘community hole’.
