Iraq should be cut up into 4 states:
- the north-eastern Kurdistan also include Syrian and Turkish Kurdistan,
- Assyria centered around Mosul for the Ancient Church of the East (St. Thomas the Apostle's Church)
- West of the Euphrates a Sunni State
- Babylonia: for the Shias
Of course the Shias and the Kurds will eventually become part of Greater Iran -- the former due to religious ties and the latter due to ethnic ties (Kurds are an Irani people)

I was thinking we should help them do that way back in 1991 instead of letting Saddam fly his helicopters north to kill them.

Yep, old Bush 41 and Schwarzkopf screwed the Pooch when they let Saddam use Helicopters in the No Fly Zone.
Then again, Powell really messed it up when he started whining about the bad PR after wiping out the Retreating Iraqi Troops coming out of Kuwait.
President Bush caved because of the Optics, and Saddam was allowed to start fresh. Imagine if we just wiped him out back then. No Clinton and no Obama. Well, I can dream.

Aside from the visible ugliness of the “Highway of Death”, there was another good reason to stop. At that time Gorbachev was trying to overthrow the old Communist/Soviet regime, but was about to experience a coup against him. Personally, I think we should have gone one about 24 hours longer, made a serious dent in the Republican Guard, but left enough of it to discourage Iranian aggression. And ended quickly enough to not get Gorbachev wiped out.

The Obama administration continues to oppose the creation of a new state. "The policy of this Administration has been clear and consistent in support of a unified Iraq," a State Department spokesman said. "A unified Iraq is a stronger Iraq and is important to the stability of the region as well." More important, that's what Iran wants -- a unified Iraq, under their control. And the Obama administration wants what Iran wants.
Further, Iran has no interest in an independent Kurdish state, given her own Kurdish minority.
Clearly, we are doing Iran's bidding -- against our own national interest!

Bush should have chopped ‘’IRAQ’’
into 3 pieces when he had the chance.
his failure to do so has
cost 100s of thousands of lives.

GHWB had gotten the UN on board and put together a multinational alliance -- IOW, the way the UN is *supposed* to work, but almost never does -- and accomplished the stated goal of ejecting Iraq from Kuwait. There was no mandate to remove Saddam Hussein. Had the "end run" proceeded as ordered, the entire Republican Guard would have been bagged before Saddam ordered the retreat.

The Iraqi Kurds were reliable allies that now no longer have reason to trust the United States - we abandoned them and nearly let them be overtaken by ISIS.WE didn't abandon them; the REGIME abandoned them.
